New diagnosis and waiting consultation

I was newly diagnosed in early July 2021 and am awaiting my first (virtual) consultation at the end of November. My migraine neurologist diagnosed MS after multiple brain MRIs (a year apart) and a spinal MRI. She has sent me for evoked potentials testing and said I would need a spinal tap to determine what type of MS I have.

I have a question about some of my symptoms and whether they are MS related or I am just an unlucky person:

  • migraines (since age 6)
  • asthma - since childhood
  • food allergies
  • multiple food sensitivities (increasing since 2007)
  • environmental sensitivities since 2016
  • hypothyroidism (2014)
  • interstitial cystitis (since age 24)
  • left sided rib pain (since 2011)
  • dropped foot since summer 2020
  • numbness in my lower right leg since April 2021
  • numb big toe on my right foot since June 2021
  • blurry vision since January 2019

The rib pain is the thing I am most curious about because no doctor could diagnose. One doctor said it was costochondritis but every other doctor dismissed it without offering an alternate diagnosis.

My rib pain has been constant since June 2011. It is on the lower left side where the floating ribs are. Nothing has touched it (opiods, cannabis, heat, cold) and it is something I just live with. I also have pain (not as severe) at the top of my sternum.

Thanks for reading if you have made it this far.

Hello Zooma1

Welcome to the forum. You’ve arrived here via a strange route. Diagnosis via a migraine specialist is relatively unusual.

Your symptoms do show up some severe bad luck. But some could be down to MS. Some maybe migraine related. Hypothyroidism, if Hashimotos, would be autoimmune so actually while distinct from MS, often appears in combination with MS (as does Graves’ disease, aka overactive or hyperthyroid, also autoimmune and common in MSers).

We can only comment on subjects or symptoms we’ve experienced, so I can’t say much about anything else! Especially I can’t comment about your rib pain.

I do hope your neurology appointment comes soon. And that it’s a good appointment!!

Sue

The last 4 on your list are most probably MS related. Possibly the rib pain, but that’s kind of odd. The other things aren’t known to be part of MS, although I’m the 4th of 5 known generations in my family to have migraines. I was also diagnosed with mild asthma many years ago, and my grandmother (from the other side) had a few issues with it, too.
