Hi, First of all please let me apologise for posting on here. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow due to what I think maybe a trapped nerve in my back. I’m finally going to see the doc after years of ( minor) back problems and pins and needles in my arms and legs, which comes and goes. I had a hospital test the other week for a barium swallow test and the nurse said I had a problem with the muscles in my neck when swallowing whilst lying down, hence stomach acid going up and swelling the tonsil of the side I usually sleep on. I’m knocking on 40 next year and have stuck it out back wise for a long time. I was waiting for it all to go away but time hasn’t healed my back or pins and needles. I’ve mentioned a few times to the doc that the pins and needles were getting worse, like not only during the night but also the day, usually from sitting then staysb after I have stood or walked for a bit. I have an intense rush of pins and needles for years on and off if I cough whilst on my back in bed and I cough, sometimes not. My leg gave way completely whilst going to the toilet last year and I have had problems with emptying my bladder which I have had a camera down for, nothing more than scaring. I’ve had a few weeks of seeing white flashes at the top of my field of vision at a very stressful time, and since my fall due to what I think was me being stupid in not letting or waiting for the pins and needles subside enough, am worked that I may fall again, it did hurt lol. I’ve what seems like three pains in my back, lower mid and between the shoulders, none intensely painful but more a discomfort most of the time, with a throbbing either side of the spine in two of the upper areas. Since that fall and at the time of the white flashes I had extreme leg weakness and what felt like me being wobbly to a degree that an old man laughed and asked how much I had had the night before. I don’t know if that fall is playing on my mind but It feels like my left leg, the one with the most pins and intense pins and needles gives way, only slightly though. From a standing straight position, with leg sort of straight, it feels like it gives, only a few inches o so then holds. I really don’t want to speak to the doc about my worries, I learned about ms from reading up upon the throat problem diagnosis. Thank you for responding if u do, I apologise for post as it seems like I am worrying over nothing, compared to the reality of what you are going through
Sorry posting from phone, going a bit horribly wrong. Should I mention this to the doc?
Also had an eye exam at the opticians once I explained those flashes, she confirmed no damage to the back of the eyes.
Also the pins and needles sometimes feels like numbness farther than a prickly feeling. Had it between my shoulder blades also in mainly legs, left mostly .
When I mentions should I speak to the doc about it, I meant in terms of ms. A very scarey thought but I can’t get those symptoms lists out of my head.
Hello and welcome One thing that a lot of doctors share a dislike of is a self-diagnosing patient so I would say it is generally best not to mention MS. Instead, for now, tell the GP about your main symptoms and let them suggest the best route forward. Do insist on a proper investigation though. There could be many reasons for your symptoms including a slipped disc and migraine so it is best to keep an open mind. It would be worthwhile seeing an ophthalmologist about the flashing lights, but chances are it is nothing to worry about, like a posterior vitreous detachment. It could also be related to migraine (it is possible to get migraine without headache and it can cause all sorts of neurological symptoms). Your GP can refer you to an ophthalmologist. So stay calm, keep an open mind, tell the GP about your symptoms, don’t be fobbed off - get things properly investigated. Good luck. Karen x
