Thanks for this post Sue and sharing so much. I’m a total wuss but know one day these are things that will inevitably happen, as I also suffer with bladder/bowel inconsistency.
I remember discussing gluten free foods with the lady on the till in M&S, way before MS bleeped on anyone’s radar - she patted her abdomen and said the colostomy had been the best thing ever for her and I remember her genuine smile and happiness she’d had it done. It’s really good to hear the positives these things can bring so thanks again

Hi Sonia, I wrote it because it was a positive step for me, and there just didn’t seem to be enough mentions on here of personal experience of colostomy.
I am always happy to reply to PMs on colostomy related worries, concerns and questions. So if you do reach the day when you think it might happen for you, feel free to PM me. (The same applies to everyone.)
And by the way, sometimes people PM me and decide maybe it’s not for them and they’ll continue to manage their bowels with Peristeen, Qufora, enemas, laxatives, DRS, whatever works for them.
So considering a colostomy doesn’t mean it’s always right for everyone. You might get to the point where you think you need more help, but a stoma isn’t quite the answer.

Hi Sue, thank you so much for your detailed info.
How are you and how is your baby behaving? (
)
I can’t transfer on and off the loo anymore. I still want to have adventures and quite an active wheelchair user.
I’m on a waiting list but have put off consultation appointment a couple of times. I think I’ll have to brave the op or stay indoors forever
Hope you’re managing well with the colostomy ![]()
That was a brilliant read, thank you very much! I’m waiting for a colostomy operation, and like you, I was really quite private about things in the past. I’ve had a catheter for years and I’m now at the stage where I’m excited about a colostomy. Going to the toilet has become a huge chore, and really difficult with balancing laxatives for irrigation. My life is currently governed by my bowels, similar to how it was governed by my bladder, before I had the catheter. I’m really looking forward to being double bagged, and I didn’t think I would ever get there years ago. The idea of that would’ve been awful! it’s funny how priorities change.

Thank you so very much Sue for this very detailed informative writeup. I too am dealing with colon issues I’ve got another colonoscopy on the 9th October, I’m on strict diet and laxatives before the dreaded wall paper paste the night before. I’ve had so many questions about what if I need a pouch and your post answers so many.
I wish you all the best and i hope you manage to work out a routine that gives you the most normal life possible.
Hi Ssssue. It’s good to hear of your experience and possibly what some of us may experience in the future..but not so good that’s what you have and have had to put up with. I actually go to a men’s cancer group. It’s a mixed group ie, different types of cancers involved. But that time when your significant other came running to your rescue bought back a memory of something that one of the gents bought up back in the year. His pouch got rather to full and exploded! Luckily enough his wife was outside the door. They were out somewhere and not at home. So with her help they managed to clean him up, if not the public convenience!
Hi thanks for posting this you’re so brave, I’m not at all brave and just sitting here crying with a mixture of fear and misery I’ve been told if the irrigation system I’m using doesn’t work the only option is a stoma I suffer with constipation and worry I’ll still be constipated afterwards I really wish I could have such a positive outlook The routine of trying to poop at the moment for me is exhausting and painful and I have developed prolapses from straining Were you ever upset at the thought of having it when it was first suggested Thanks Jane
Hi @mully . Like many of us I also suffer from constipation. For some reason of another it became much and worryingly worse about a month ago prompting me to try everything and anything to sort it out. For me the solution that worked was to take 10ml Dulcolax one evening and in the following morning dissolve 6 sachets of Laxido in a large mug of water and drink it all. It worked! Best not to go out that day or the .next !
These days I occasionally have to dissolve 2 sachets of Laxido in a mug of water but the worst of constipation seems to have resolved. I also eat bran flakes , blueberries and milled flaxseeds at breakfast along with plenty of fruit and veg at meal times.
