Ms hug feelings

Wonder if anyone can explain their MS hug sensations please

This is my daughter’s comment tonight…huge shooting and crunching pains around left ribs up to shoulder, varying in severity, for about 2 minutes. She is currently feeling pretty good and then this wee reminder arrived! Does that help?

Is MS Hug a RR thing or can it happen in Progressive forms as well? My concern is that left ribs & shoulder pains can be the prelude to a heart attack.

Thank you very much for your reply. It does help., mine seems to go from my neck to my feet in flashes type electric shock almost feeling with occasional tight chest. All ecg suggests my heart is healthy though

Not sure to be honest…

Lhermittes perhaps?

This sounds more like Lhermitte’s. The MS hug is usually more of an intense pressure around your rib cage, like a python determined to squeeze you to death. It can be quite painful and may last anywhere from a few minutes to several days, but the pain doesn’t extend beyond that area.

I often get the MS hug. I can only describe it a a feeling like a tight band being tightened around my rib cage. Sometimes lasts for a few minutes sometimes up to an hour. My Neurologist says to me he prefers to call it the MS squeeze because hug makes it sound too nice and there’s nothing nice about it!:flushed:. SpaceLady. x

Your description fits mine very well. I do find it hits my neck as well almost like a spasm.
Thank you for your reply and take care

Hi Tilly,

That feeling that you’ve described where you get an electrical sensation down your body is due to a symptom known as Lhermittes syndrome. Its caused by a lesion/s in your neck (cervical spine). As you bend/flex the neck area this causes that electrical sensation due to their being demyelination at the cervical area .

The MS hug on the other hand is a tight feeling around the rib cage area. This can occur all the way around your upper waist area (think where you would wear a corset), or it can occur in patches in either your front or back. In some people the ms hug causes pain and alot of discomfort.

I currently have the ms hug , mines not as bad now than what it was when i was diagnosed with ms when at that time I had the ms hug where i felt like someone had tied a rope around my waist really tight. My breathing felt very restricted , and I couldnt wear a bra .

Yes that sounds right. It comes and goes but it’s been bad this time. Thank you

I first experienced what I’m sure was the MS hug when I was 7 years old. It was a very very tight feeling right around my rib cage. I could hardly breathe. So frightening for a child of that age. Now I know what the MS hug truly feels like having experienced it many times, I’m sure that was my 1st MS symptom. I was diagnosed with RRMS at age 29. I’m sure it was sitting on the back boiler all those years. Just waiting!!:flushed:

Hi, so GCCK, I have progressive MS and I too get the hug, really very painful across my chest, feels like a heart attack, I’ve never called an ambulance yet, just weathered the storm, is this right, who knows,
