MS and critical illness claims

I was diagnosed with RRMS in January this year following a bad relapse in December. In hindsight I’ve had a few symptoms over the last 5 years but it’s only recently become identifiable as a relapse via MRI. My neuro exam was fine in Jan but I had L’hermittes, sensory problems in left side and hand and arm numbers with an EDSS of 1. In 2003 I took out a joint decreasing term life and critical illness policy with Direct Line which is to pay off the mortgage in the event of death or critical illness. I recently looked into it and decided to claim although it is now part of a closed book of business belonging to Countrywide Assured. They have asked for a report from my GP and Neurologist and my approval for access to medical records. It’s so long ago I can’t remember what I filled out on my form in 2003 although I’m always very honest about these things. I changed GP in 2002 and not sure if my GP would have access to records from pre that period? Would the insurance company even go back that far? I’m also concerned that because it’s a closed book of business that Countrywide might try to find some way to wriggle out of paying what I’m due.

Does anyone one have any experience or advice on this one. I’m told it could take a few weeks to get the GP and neurologist reports and therefore to review the claim.

many thanks!

That’s not your problem to solve. Grant your permission and leave them to get on with it and good luck. I wish I had remembered to take out a critical illness policy! But there are lots of people on here who have had their critical illness pay out and hurrah for that and I hope that you join their number.
