MRI query

Hi all Is it usual to have an MRI during (or following) a relapse? Kaz xx

I think they sometimes do if they think things are changing and want to compare. When I was diagnosed following 2nd massive relapse they said they didn’t need another as the first showed more than enough info. However things continued to go wrong and I had another yesterday spine and brain MRI with dye. To see how active it was on compared to 6 months ago Not sure if I’ve answered your question. X

I often wonder if a person with MS got a spinal tumour unrelated to MS would it be discovered in time or would symptoms be just put down to MS and the tumour be allowed to grow until it was too late to do anything about.

Thank you, Em. I was finally diagnosed in October following a fairly severe elapse, and optic neuriris the year before. I had had brain scans over the years but they had always been clear (the most recent showing 2 small lesions on my brain). That was the first time they MRI’d my spine and a lesion was found there too. That was about 7 months ago, and as I say, the diagnosis followed in October. I was due to start Capaxone next week (I had been on Avonex but it didn’t agree with me), but now that I’m having another relapse they’re holding off on a decision about my treatment until I’ve had another MRI. Must admit I’m a bit confused about that. Assumed they’d just start the Capaxone once this flare up passed. Thank you May, its interesting that there’s no standard protocol nationally. Moyna, with that in mind I should be pleased that they’re scanning me again  Kaz xxx

Unless they are considering 2nd line dmd. I started extavia in December I think my stiffness is worse with it. But in my letter to doctor my neuro said she is considering moving me to tysabri or Gilenya as it appears highly active. The second scan should help with their decision. Em x

I hadn’t considered that, Em. Thank you xx

It’s maybe not the case with you just a possibility I’m a newbie and just learning. X

Me too  x

Hiya

I was told by my old neuro that once you had diagnosis there really wasn’t much point in doing another MRI as they know you have MS and you symptoms tell them more about what is happening than an MRI would.

I do know that some DMD’s require you to have a certain number of active lesions on an MRI in order to qualify for it, so in that case you would be required to have another one.

I think some areas/neuros are different though so it probably depends where you are as well.

Hi Sue. Thanks for your reply  Xx

I seem to get scanned maybe every 3 years or so, usually following relapse. Found it amazing on my last appointment where Neuro had 2 side my size 3d images from MRI a few months ago and one in 2010. So clever

Wow! That must have been really interesting xx
