methylprednisolone Side Effects

Hey guys,

I have just been on a dose of methylprednisolone (500mg a day for 5 days). I feel like total crap and am seriously regretting ever taking them.

Anyway, the biggest thing for me at the moment (Other then the fogginess and general feeling rubbish) is I have lost my sense of taste. Has anyone else experienced this as a side effect - if you did how long did it last?

I miss the small things like the tast of chocolate or a nice cup of tea. :frowning:

Thanks

Amy

Steroids are bad news and can sometimes give you more problems than the original problem you were dealing with! For that reason I avoid them and let nature take its course. Sorry I cant give you any advice on the lack of taste, although it could it be part of your relapse perhaps? Steroids may not work immediately, or at all for that matter, so you could still be having some relapse symptoms. Hope you feel better soon xx

Hi Amy

I’m afraid at this point that all you can do is wait for the effects to wear off.

The metallic taste in your mouth will wear off quite quickly. Try eating mints, they may only help momentarily but I tend to nibble at extra strong mints when I’ve taken steroids (i.e. rather than eat the whole thing at once, just bite off a bit at a time). I’ve also kept small tubes of toothpaste by the bed so when I wake up in the night (or just can’t sleep) I can ward off the foul taste with a tiny bit of toothpaste.

As Lisa said, if you’ve actually lost your sense of taste this could be a part of your relapse.

The feeling like you’ve been kicked all over will also fade within a few days. And you should be sleeping better quite quickly after stopping the steroids.

The effects of the steroids however, may not be instantaneous, it could take weeks or longer to shorten the relapse. That’s if they’re actually going to work. And they don’t always. The effect of steroids can’t be predicted, one time they’ll work wonders and the next time they’ll not help at all. It’s a bit like MS in that. Unpredictable.

Hopefully you’ll feel better within a few days.

Thanks, it’s not the metallic taste that ended on Wednesday, I had no taste whatsoever but it suddenly came back last night. Thank god that was not a nice experience.

Thanks for all the advice, Im not actually in a relapse, the nuro prescribed this to see if it would calm the progression/inflammation down and I can tell things are slightly better - I feel stronger in my legs and even though I was up peeing about 8 times overnight (thank you steroids) I actually feel energised and for the first time in about 14 year don’t feel tired.

Things still hurt in my neck but I think the steroids are starting to work. Not sure I would have them if ever offered again though.
