Memory problems with Pregabalin

I have been taking Pregabalin for around 5 weeks, 50mg twice a day. I have just got over the tiredness and feeling sick, but it wasn’t really helping with the pain in my arm and leg, so my GP suggested increasing it to 100mg twice a day.

Since increasing it, I think I am having problems with my memory…I had to stop Gabapentin for this reason. It’s difficult to tell at the moment, but just wondered if this is another side effect that I will get used to, or if the memory problems will only get worse?

I have been off work 5 months now and due to go back in 2 weeks, so want to make sure I am ok on the meds before I return, as I don’t want to have any more time off. Saying that, this dosage doesn’t seem to be helping the pain either…I felt much better on Gabapentin, apart from the memory issues!

If I had to stop Pregabalin, are there any alternatives I could try? I only ever seem to see Pregabalin and Gabapentin mentioned, I already take Amitriptylene for migraine.

Thanks

I’ve had my pregablin put up every fortnight and am now on 300mg twice a day, I forget everything, my wife has to ring me when I get to the shop because I can’t remember what I went for most of the time. I still get pain in my legs even on such a high dose. I’m not sure if there is an alternative or not. I still get tired after taking my meds. Try setting reminders on your phone, I set reminders for everything. Adam x

hi fizzy

i’ve been on 600mg pregabalin for over a year now and haven’t noticed any memory issues.i also take amitriptyline, tizanidine and tramadol so it’s a case of finding what suits…your gp or neuro should be able to prescribe various meds and through time you will find the right combination for you.

take care

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your reply. I have started setting reminders on my phone…I had been setting timers for things, but when they went off, I didn’t have a clue what they were for! Just bought myself a diary too, as I thought that might help…but as my other half says, I’ve got to remember to take it with me!

I’m just concerned about going back to work, as I am, I don’t think I could do my job properly, so wondered if there was anything else I could try. If the memory issues aren’t going to go away, I think I’d be better on Gabapentin…it worked for my pain and made me feel happy, which can’t be a bad thing Pregabalin, makes me feel crappy and tearful most of the time.

I know if I mention the memory problems to my GP, he will just tell me to stop taking Pregabalin, but wanted to know there was something else I could try before I tell him.

Thanks

Hi fizzy I was reading posts and I think it was Karen or Janet that have tried gabapentin. Pregablin and something else, I can’t remember what the something else was called or what post it was on, told you my memory is sh$t, I will have a look for you for the other one. I work as a tattooist, customers walk through my door for an appointment with me and I ask what they are having, most reply how have you forgot, it’s only been a few days since I was last here. My work mates know what I’m like and help me out, perhaps yours will do the same Adam x

Hi Baz,

Thanks for your reply. I think I’m not giving myself enough time to get used to the meds…I think I know that Pregabalin isn’t the right one for me, but reluctant to give it up seeing as I’m due to return to work shortly. I know if my GP starts me on different meds, he will want me to have another sick note.

You’re right, it is a case of me finding the right combination of meds, but I suppose I’m just being impatient and wanting to find that combination quickly! I think I will go back and see my GP and see what he has to say, I don’t see the neuro for another 4 months and the MS nurse has always been on holiday on the occasions I have rung.

Thanks

Hi Adam,

Must have missed your reply last night, sorry. Unfortunately, things have changed whilst I have been off work…my manager has retired, one colleague is on maternity and the other off with stress, which is probably down to all the changes. It will be very different when I return, so can’t guarantee anyone helping me out…I have also heard that the new member of our team is hoping I don’t return so she can have some of my hours, so I can’t see her helping me out! I think it will be quite challenging when I return, but I’m going to give it my best shot.

I hate being so forgetful, it’s really not me at all
