Well, I have never been in so much pain in all my life. Had to leave work early due to the lp headache. Was definitely not warned by professionals how bad it could be. Was nearly sick in the taxi home. Thank God it was only a five minute drive. My bed couldn’t come quick enough. Sometimes money definitely doesn’t matter over health. A day or ten in bed it is. I hate it when people look at you like your faking it. I wish people could understand.
Hi Pople22,
Bit late; sorry; but the medical rofession are getting better at doing this procedure.
The actual procedure is not painful; in fact the only thing you feel is a scratch when the anaesthetic goes in. The actual removal of fluid is just a feeling of pressure if done properly. I must stress if done properly; do not let anyone practice on you insist on someone who is experienced.
It’s after you MAY get something called ‘the headache from hell.’ To cut down the chances of getting this you should lay flat for at least 3 hours do not even get up to go to the loo; use a pan. Drink at least 2 litres of classic Coke, not diet; it’s the caffeine that aids replenishment of your CNS fluid. Being your drinking a lot take one of those bendy straws otherwise the bed will get more Coke than you. If you want a change of drink very strong coffee.
These things will drastically reduce your chances of getting a headache that could last about 8 days. If you have a couple of days off work and rest if you do not get the headache, if you do 10 days off work.
If the headache last more than 10 days you could need a blood patch; especially if there’s a wet patch on the bed in the area of the spine after a nights sleep; this is rare.
Good luck.
George
Really hope you are feeling better.
I have witnessed this with my daughter, she has had two lumbar punctures and after each one she had the most awful headaches.
They were so bad and not improving that after a few days she was taken back into hospital for a procedure to reverse the side effects. While not a pleasant experience the effect was instant, clearing the headaches.
Good luck
Hi Pople22
I know exactly how you feel, I had the spinal headache after an almost painless LP some years ago. You cannot fight it, you have no choice, you must go to bed, lay flat and stay there. Also, drink lots of fluid and take painkillers.
I think you were pretty brave (or foolish) in going to work, I didn’t even try.
Hope it soon passes.
Ben
Thanks everyone. Well i had a weeks annual leave booked and then had my appointment date for the Monday after so I had to book that as an extra day as it was. But no one told me how bad it would be, they just said headache but I suffer with persistent migraines so figured a headache would be manageable. Little did I know I would be in a taxi nearly throwing up and sweating because of the pain. I think they should warn people how bad the “headaches” can actually be. It was really scary at one point. Still can’t get the look of colleagues out of my head. Like I should feel bad for going home. They have no idea the demons we face inside (and out) everyday. I’m not even diagnosed but whether I have ms or another inflammatory disease my symptoms are very similar so I understand people that do have ms or other hidden illnesses. Makes me angry. Sorry for the rant just a tad grumpy today.
