Ill Health Retirement. Civil Service

Anybody on here who has taken, or is in the process of taking, retirment on grounds of ill health from the Civil Service?

I know that there a few people who have taken it from the NHS and Local Authority pension scehemes but the Civil Service scheme is (of course!) a very different beast and has its own quirks.

I know that I am walking a tightrope job-wise at the moment and 1 relapse is likely to tip me off so any tips or stories would be much appreciated. PM me if you would prefer not to post on the public forum.

I managed to escape a few years ago and it was pretty simple. Had been off for about 6 months and my doctor suggested stopping. The whole thing was sorted in a couple of months. Occupational health would be your first stop. Have a look at the pension scheme and see what the procedure is.

Hello

It is not just the Civil Service that is a very different beast and has it’s own quirks, my workplace pensions which is the Local Government Pension Scheme is very much like the Civil Service, it’s not just about whether you would be

lucky enough to get first tier ill health retirement, it’s whether you could get the advice to make an informed decision and whether you would be allowed to get go out on ill health retirement, many of those such as union reps say you cannot retire just because you do not want to work anymore l had that said to me, disgusting I know.

Hello

It is much harder now to qualify for ill health retirement.

The criteria now is whether you are able to do any job, including working from home.

My experience is that unless you have a life limiting illness then retirement is hard to leave by. A more common method is dismissal with compensation after a period(s) of absence.

Hi, I know you say the rules are different for LA employees, to those for Civil servants. But I went out on IHR from the LA and was treated very fairly.

The only thing I want to express to anyone thinking of finishing work this way, is that you must NOT say you want to retire on ill health …you let your employer tell you…ie you go on the sick for months and then you are sent to a doctor who decides if you are fit to the do the job you are employed to do. If you are found unfit, then OH will take over.

In my case, they then looked to see if they had any vacancies which would suit me better.
There weren`t any, so I was offered retirement on ill health. Going out this way doubled my benefits. I got a decent lump sum and a small monthly pension.

I hope you are treated fairly.

Ensure you are getting all the benefits you are entitled to ie ESA andPIP and maybe incmoe support and housing benefit.

Started on process to retire on ill health from teaching. Been to OT twice, second time after falling at work (good old drop-foot!) and hurt right wrist badly. Lots of adjustments made by caring Head, but feel so tired and brain foggy not sure how long I can carry on. What should I do next?
