Hiya How long does it take to get diagnose with ms?? I’ve had two scans a ct scan seen nero and still waiting been 3 months. Anyone else had these problems. Thanks
Hi, sorry but there isn`t a stock answer to your question hun.
Neuros need concrete proof to give a diagnosis.
Sometimes tests are inconclusive.
I presented with typical PPMS for years, but my tests showed no proof.
I was mis-diagnosed for years and do not have MS, but a similar condition…but even that is only half complete!

Hi I’ve seen 3 neuros ,brain & spine MRI , chest ct scan, ultra sound. Lumber puncture , evok potential tests , psychical exams and so many blood tests I can’t remember And 9 months later still no DX Gray
Hi -
For some people, the clinical and radiological evidence is there straight away - so pretty quick diagnosis.
For others, it can take longer for the evidence to show, and the diagnostic process be drawn out over months / years.
And for other people, the evidence will never point to MS, no matter how many scans / tests are done. That is not to say the person is not poorly; just that the tests and evidence indicate that the cause is not MS. This can be a very frustrating position to be in; you know you are not well and you suspect MS; but repeated tests indicate it is not the case. It is difficult to know when to ‘keep pushing’ for further tests and assessments (thinking that something might show at some point) , and when to accept that it is in fact ‘not MS’.
I guess it is impossible at this point to predict which of these groups you will fall into. Only time will tell - which is hard, because there is no predictable ‘end point’ to the diagnostic process.
But I would say that, although it must feel like you have been waiting ages for answers, and it is not a nice thing to be in limbo - 3 months is not a long time at all for this sort of assessment process, I think in most cases it can take a bit longer.
Hi -
hope you don’t mind, I just read your previous posts - one from quite a while ago saying you’d had MRI, and another a while later saying you’d still not heard about results.
am i right in thinking your question is not just ‘how long does it take to get an MD diagnosis’, but also ‘how long does it take to get MRI results’?
As mentioned in previous posts, it can take quite a while to get a specific diagnosis, but results of individual tests should not take such a long time.
I think most patients get MRI results within about 3 - 8 weeks. If you’ve been left waiting for your results much longer than that, then that is not on - if I were you I’d consider phoning the neuro secretary to ask about it. The results might or might not lead to a specific diagnosis (like others have said, it can sometimes take more than one set of tests) - but you shouldnt be left waiting for months to find out the results of tests that have already been done.
So if you are still waiting to hear about results of tests done quite some time ago, then maybe give neuro secretary a ring, or failing that, contact your GP and get them to chase the results up - or you could also contact PALS for advice (Patient Advice and Liason Service).

Hi Thanks guys for replies… I have phoned and asking about MRI results and still not back so have fax to see where about there are! So the people who have symptoms of ms.but don’t show ms on MRI scans… How do u cope with being un well everyday? I hope I have not got ms but do show some symptom of it. If I haven’t then what is wrong with me as I feel so ill everyday and so fatigue it’s un real… I hate being like this…
I think I was expecting a much faster diagnosis I’m sorry you have to wait so long Hugs
