Hey everyone! My names Sara Im 22 caring for my mum who has progressive ms which has progressed faster recently, so I am struggling a lot lately with things like helping her go to the bathroom (specifically transferring her from her chair to the toilet and back) and things like pressure sores. Does anyone have any advice or techniques for lifting? The bathroom has all the bars fitted however the have become useless at this point as she cannot grip and has muscle weakness in her arms.
I am fairly new to all of this so it has been a difficult emotionally and physically for the both of us.
Thanks,
Hi Sara
You’re amazing, at 22 and looking after your Mum
As you say, the grab handles won’t help if she can’t hold on. She needs a hoist. Talk to your County Council,
Graeme
Hello Sara
You really are having a tough time, you and your mum.
I think you both really need an assessment by an occupational therapist for an aid to help your mum onto the loo. Recently my rehabilitation consultant was trying to get me to use one and I’ve resisted because I still have some strength in my arms. But if your mum doesn’t, it sounds like she could do with it.
You should avoid any lifting of your mother, it could hurt either one of you.
She is so lucky to have you, but try to get some outside help too.
Sue
Hi Sara,
Sorry to hear that you & your mum are having tough times. There has been some great advice (imho) above. If a bit of support is available you will both benefit. In order to keep giving your mum the support she needs in the long term, you also need to look after (be kind to) yourself. You will need some quality time with young healthy people if you want to stay strong.
All the best to you both.
Mick
Hi Sara,
I send you my support. Hugs!
