Help regarding retirement

Hi,hope everyone is taking it easy today. This is going to be a long one. Finally got my DMD date 15th Nov vumerity also on the 15th occupational therapist visiting home along with physiotherapist.Yesterday got a phone call from my general manager saying she’s been meaning to call me for a number of weeks now… I’ve been off work since May and the only contact I’ve had has been with occupational health who has wrote emails to my boss saying someone should have contacted myself, that was eight weeks ago and two weeks ago. I work in the NHS but through a private company…I worked for NHS for over 25 years before they lost the tender I’ve worked for this company for another 13 years. Occupational health have said I’m not fit to do my current job and that with reasonable adjustments she doesn’t think I’d be able to return, also that she thinks I should be going down the ill health retirement road but she can’t put me forward as it has to be my company. Now I was diagnosed with CIS in 2015 facial numbness balance problems, the facial numbness went but my balance hasn’t returned. No my neurologist retired then Covid happened so I got lost?.Two years ago in January I was assaulted at my work and knocked out I work as security and was assisting NHS staff but that went tits up and knocked out even though there was 13 staff there no one help…but that’s another story, Anyway ever since I’ve had issues which kept on getting worse over time I now wear bilateral hearing aids lost 40% hearing in left ear and the tinnitus level 4 out of 5 which drives me nuts really nuts. Also Been diagnosed with PTSD.
Then my left foot went numb which didn’t help balance…we should all be taught how to fall as I’m now an expert.went to minor injuries and seen one of the Nurses I used to work with when I worked for the NHS…knew her since she was a student nurse, now an ANP she asked how I was doing, told her about incident and symptoms. She phoned A+E consultant who told her to tell me to make an appointment with neurology which I did and came pretty quick seen neurologist on the Monday had urgent MRI on the Saturday,He actually told me at the appointment that he was confident I had MS. three weeks later he confirmed diagnosis multiple legions on brain and spine. RRMS…Now fast forward, my general manager phoned concerned…no she’s not.i put my doctors line in on Wednesday doctor gave me a sick line for three months.iI think that’s the only reason she phoned she’s actually coming to my house next Friday for a visit. How do I go about asking for I’ll health retirement as I’m done with that place oh had my driving licence taken off me to add insult to injury.Sorry if this is all over the place…I’ve read lots of posts regarding I’ll health and nothing similar to my position and help would be very much appreciated

Hello Rocenante,
What a time you’re having. I don’t have any knowledge as such of this although I would say it is a road I may well have to travel down. I am currently on my third month off. The lovely people on this site will keep you right but for now keep safe and well.
Thinking of you

Just wondering if you know anything about the companies ill health retirement policy? If not then the first thing to do is probably to have a good look at that and perhaps also have a chat with any Union Rep.

Thanks for the replies, just to add I’m currently taking my employer to court for my assault,I initially won the case but the have only offered for the back injury lumber stenosis. They have refused anything for the PTSD as according to them my job has acceptable risks and they say I have only mild tinnitus( I have seen both a consultant psychiatrist and an Consultant ENT surgeon) So I’m wondering if they are ignoring my case for I’ll health retirement…will have to wait and see what Friday brings

Good luck for Friday, I hope all goes well,
Maryx

Rocenante - it looks as if you’re heading for ill-health retirement - you have to find out how the system works - are there different schemes - which one gives you the best deal - is the fact you worked for the NHS before changing employer relevant ? Did you have signs of m.s. when you worked for the NHS ?
DO NOT assume various agencies have your best interests at heart - you have to look after yourself.
They cost money but I would consider getting advice from a solicitor specialising in this field.

Just a quick update, seen GM today and I must admit she did genuinely seemed concerned. She was quite shocked how much I’ve changed since she last seen us in our control room.asked if there was anything she could do to help, saying that the insurance claim is being dealt with the insurance company and this is nothing to do with them anyway… saying that our company has a fund for staff in situation where they might need help…I mentioned ill health Retirement and she basically said she honestly couldn’t see me managing in any position at work and she would fully support my application for I’ll health retirement…so the journey begins…at least I’m in a better place and relieved about outcome of meeting

Just a further update.
Had a capability meeting in January with union and HR team, everything which was said in previous meetings all said and agreed again. Fast forward to today and pretty much nothing has happened no further meetings or communication apart from one welfare check…
Which I was told we’re waiting on the pension provider getting back to ourselves. Pension company phoned me once in April and once yesterday saying they have sent emails with all documentation but my company aren’t engaging with them. After the welfare meeting I had I received an email stating that we’ve chased pension company and are checking what holidays you are due because my last pay should be this week and that the GM will contact myself…Nothing. The phone call from the pension providers yesterday said that I was to get in contact with my company to chase them up…
My union representative is having a meeting with the GM tomorrow on another matter and will bring this issue up…I’d like to be a fly on the wall.

I’m sorry to hear about the difficult situation you’re facing. I don’t know how really I can help you but I want to say Good luck, and I hope your situation improves soon.

My previous employer officially ill-health retired me on 13 March, I’ve not heard anything from superannuation since then too.
13 is usually a lucky number for me, like passing driving test on Friday the Thirteenth. :red_car:
I suppose as with all things, it’s just a working progress, so I shouldn’t be too worried.
Best regards,
JP
