On Monday my husband (Russell) woke up with a tight chest and tingling in his left arm. He refused to go to the hospital. It lasted 12 hrs and despite me insisting we go, he still refused. He eventually agreed to go to the drs, but he couldn’t get an appointment until 5.30 on the Tuesday. Because it was late, the doctor couldn’t take bloods so asked him to return on Wednesday. At 5pm he got a call from his gp to go straight to A & E as he’d had a heart attack. He is only 53, slimish and has regular exercise and doesnt fit into the normal category for a ‘heart attack patient’. My MS is officially slowing me down, I started tec in November & currently waiting results of an mri on my hip as having pain when weight bearing (standing still only and relaxing in the evening) - I’m seeing the consultant on Wednesday for the results. Life is difficult. I hate my new job and im waiting to hear if I got a new job on Monday. Things can only get better!
Wow. I can’t believe you didn’t call an ambulance! Whether he wanted it or not, this is really the first priority. I presume both of you know by now, about popping an aspirin under his tongue, should it happen again? There isn’t a “category” for heart attack patients either. Don’t be fooled. Look at the seemingly fit and healthy sporty type people that experience them. It might be a good idea for you both to attend a first aid class you know. It wouldn’t be a waste if time.
I don’t mean to scare you, but he could have died in those 12 hours. I’m sure you’ve both had a shock and wake up call. You don’t need added stress in your life. Neither of you do. The best of luck with your possible new job. I really hope it’s good news. Keep us posted. x
Thanks Poppy and Jackie. Russell is still in hospital, waiting for his angiogram, which has already been postponed from Friday to first thing this morning and now after lunch. I guess we’re lucky he is stable but the waiting is killing me. I should hear about my job today too but i’m now considering returning to education as a teaching assistant now and once we find out more about his heart attack and why it happened he might want to change his role too. At least my children are grown up and almost independant. 2 in uni, one in final year at college, possible uni in September and my eldest in Canada with 1 year of his working visa left. But hey ho, life goes on…just got to re evaluate our lives and move on. Ironically, I had changed my diet to vegan (with fish) after christmas and Russ was adapting his diet too. New start all round by the looks of things.
Glad things are moving in the right direction Sallum, and New Starts are sometimes exciting.
Have just heard that he doesnt have a blockage so doesnt need a stent. So now we need to know why its happened and to find out how to stop it happening again. Sharon x
Thank goodness you got a " warning " attack and it will now be looked into.
Stupid gp should really have sent hubby straight to A and E when he first saw hubby.
With luck this may have been a one off but at least tests etc will follow now plus you both will be proactive if hubby has any signs in future. Forget the gp and dial 999 no one will think you are wasting their time you have every reason to call and stress that this is a high risk emergency.
Good luck to you both, hang in there and there will be a light along the way.
