I thought I would start a new thread to let you all know that having a Supra Pubic Catheter by local anaesthetic was not too bad at all. All I could feel was lots of pushing and no pain. So anyone who needs to have it done by local please don’t fret as mine went ok.
just a couple of tips…things I did at the beginning, after the op;
I cleaned the wound myself at night, with senset (on a prescription… soap in a can…a foam cleanser with no soap…so no irritant…nice smell too.) and my carer cleaned and dressed it in a morning, after my shower.
After a couple of months, it got cleaned and dressed just in a morning.
It can give off a bit of a nasty smell, even after my shower, but sunset does the job right!
Some folk dont have a dressing on their wound, but I feel cleaner and safer with a dressing…personal choice.
There is another chocie to be made…will you wear a bag or empty via a valve…ie no bag?
Having a bag allows you to forget about the bag for a bit. it holds 500ml and it could fill in a morning…then empty it however you like.
At night I swap the day bag for night bag, which holds 2 litres. I go to bed around 6pm, hubby empties the bag, (but for some reason, I dont produce so much wee in an evening and there isnt a lot in the bag.) at 11pm.
Then he empties it at 8am and it is almost full!!!
Hope this isnt overloading you with too much info. but it`s all new to you, so you may have these queries about how to do things.
Thanks for the tips Poll. I’ve been using a day bag in the day and then switch to the larger night bag.
The district nurse has just been and she said it was lovely and clean and wasn’t red at all and was healing nicely. She said to shower tomorrow but only use water and no soap the first time.
The only odd thing I’ve had happening today is that I feel as if I need the loo and I haven’t had that feeling for months. I’m wondering if it’s my bladder getting used to the balloon and catheter in there. I mentioned it to the nurse and she just said “Oh that sounds annoying”. Lol. It’s early days eh? Only had the op Wednesday afternoon.
Thanks for your tip sweets and for your nice words Linda.
Mine made such a difference I went from monthly infections and hospitals to virtually no infections in almost three years, time flies I had to think how long it’s been. Glad it all went well, give it a few weeks to settle and you’ll be fine.
I am looking forward to getting out and about with my wheelie. I am suffering a bit today. The wound is very sore but like you say Hoppity it will take a few weeks to settle. I am so pleased that it has now been done. I must remember though that it will take time to heal. Be patient Mrs I keep telling myself.
