New diagnosis of clinical isolated syndrome, neurological problems for last year. waiting to see consultant again on Friday to see whether that diagnosis has changed since I have had lumbar puncture. MRI brain and spinal cord reveal lesions. I have been prescribed gabapentin 300m increasing quickly to 1.8g !! I’m not prepared to take drugs that have so many side affects. Why have I been prescribed gabapentin? Comments most welcome!
Hi, I was diagnosed in March 2013 and given Gabapentin. I take 600m 3 times a day and have found it to work and takes away my pain. It did take some time to work but is does the job. I found this medicine to cause me the least side effects. I have used other medicine but I did suffer side effect, but for some reason Gabapentin has been the best. I would recommend trying it and seeing how it works for you. Hope this helps

Gabapentin is prescribed for Neuropathic pain.
Maybe you said something that indicated that you have some sort of neuropathic pain. 1.8 g is a medium sort of dose. Depending on who you ask, the maximum is either 2.7, or 3.6 g per day.
Personally, I am on 2.7g/day with no really obvious side effects. Gabapentin may contribute to a feeling of fatigue, but when I cut back (after a discussion with an MS Nurse) it made no difference so I went back up. I do have a slightly harsher speaking voice (another known side effect) but this probably sounds worse through my hearing aids. Given that I was getting “electric shock” pains almost at random, and the Gabapentin stopped them within a few days, I will stay with it.
Worth a try if you do get pain.

I am taking 600mg 3 times a day with no particular side effects and it does take the edge off my neuropathic pain
Hey, I’ve just been advised to give this ago also. My niggle is about possible weight gain. Having always been quite overweight, I lost 5 stone through the simple idea of “eat less and move more”. Having lost my dad two years ago, I’ve now put 2.5 stone on :-(. My diet hasn’t changed but I have to admit to not exercising as much. I was put on 40mg Citalopram after his death and question if this played a role. Anyone had experience of weight gain with it? I know it’s a vanity thing, but it’s so frustrating when I worked hard at it for years. L x
Hello x
After suffering with increasingly horrible symptoms for a very long time and being given all sorts of different meds in the hope it would help all the different ‘possible’ diagnoses i was being given - I had some horrible side effects including nausea, acephalgic migraines, rashes etc etc etc etc - basically I reacted badly to absolutely everything I was trying - in the vain hope they would help me!
Then to being taken off absolutely everything and left for months with not even an everyday bloomin painkiller when I needed it was I have to say daunting!!
When I was eventually diagnosed ‘probable MS’ I was prescribed Baclofen (which instantly helped some of my symptoms) and then given Gabapentin 1200mg - this is the drug that I have to say has been an utter lifesaver!
I haven’t had a single side effect that was in any way near the symptoms I was suffering - much to my doc’s astonishment! and I know that even if I did have some side effects - I would gladly tolerate them - for me anything is better than the utter misery and debilitating MS symptoms I was suffering!
So what I’m trying to say is - basically only you can judge how tolerable your current symptoms are - and weigh that up against any possible side effects you may or may not suffer - and you can always stop taking them (under your docs advice of course) if they become unbearable!

L x I have to say that I put on weight - not because I was on any meds - but because I was so fatigued, unable to literally move for weeks on end and feeling so utterly miserable that I comfort ate - absolutely anything in sight!!
My close family also cooked me everything I could possibly dream of!!
I haven’t gained anything since taking Gapapentin - not a single pound! In fact I’ve lost weight - because I feel better and don’t feel the need to binge xxxxjenxxx
