Hey has anyone had flexible sigmoidoscopy done? I would like to hear peoples experiences they had with the procedure as I am having it done this week, thanks
Me too. I’m having one on 10th Feb. So I’d like to know what to expect. I’m having the Sigmoidoscopy to establish exactly what is going on in my Bowel, to simultaneously ‘band’ some internal haemorrhoids and establish exactly what surgical fix might help with my chronic bowel problems.
So any experiences that can be shared (anonymously if you’d rather given the subject matter) would be much appreciated.
Sue
I had it done a few years back and it was fine. A bit uncomfortable but that was it.
I’ve had a colonoscopy which if I remember correctly involves going further up through the bowel. To be honest, the prep was worse than the procedure. Had to have bowel prep so spent the day before on the loo - sorry if TMI. Then the consultant couldn’t cannulate me so don’t think my sedation was IV. Having said that the actual procedure was ok. He explained what he was seeing on a screen that I could see. Felt quite groggy for the rest of the day when sedation kicked in but that was it.
Good luck with it. Like most of these things often the thought is worse than it actually is.
I have had one. It was fine. A bit uncomfortable, but not painful xxx
I had the flexi sig done about an hour ago, they give me enema to empty my bowel, then the procedure itself took about 3 mintues, unpleasant but it want really painful
Thanks for telling us, I was hoping you would as mine’s next week.

Oh God & mine really looking forward to this! Tracey

Hello all
So, a report on my flexible sigmoidoscopy on Friday.
To start with, you need to know that my system absolutely does not work. In particular, the sphincters of my bowel and bladder don’t open when they’re supposed to. Kind of the opposite of incontinence. So, I use ISC for the bladder and DRS for bowels. (Digital rectal stimulation) Which means that most methods of managing bowels don’t work. I’ve tried pretty much everything, glycerol suppositories, mini enemas, Peristeen. Basically, the only output is what’s already in the rectum. So I find that later in the day, like hours later, a load of watery poo just comes out all on its own. Or sometimes I have to DRS to get the watery stool out.
So I couldn’t have an enema prior to the sigmoidoscopy.
The procedure was OK, I decided not to watch most of it on the TV. There are some things you can live your life without seeing and the inside of my bowel is one of them. Nothing much to report really, it only hurt when she turned the camera round. A bit ouchy then.
They also ‘banded’ a couple of internal haemorrhoids and a prolapse. This hurt a bit more as the instrument was a bit bigger than the camera. I asked whether I was going to be able to DRS afterwards, the surgeon said just to be careful. And if I have a big amount of bleeding then I might have knocked one of the banded bits off and to go to A & E.
So, all in all, not pleasant but not too grim.
Sue
Oh and the outcome, no major issues, my future bowel management options are to keep doing DRS as I am, or have a stoma. Which is I think what I’ll be doing after my next appointment with my colorectal surgeon. A bit scary, but somehow a bit reassuring too. I’m fed up with being at the mercy of my bowels and bladder. I’m having an SPC done on 3rd March so sometime after that it seems a colostomy is ahead for me. But from then on, no more worries about being able to get on and off the damn loo. Just manage the waste products.

Glad to hear it went ok I’ve had a colonoscopy twice now and have to agree with smur69, the prep was far worse than the procedure!

I think our Ssuuee deserves a medal for all she has/is/and will be going through. Despite all her difficulties, she remains an interesting, supportive and much valued member of this forum.
