I’m new here, but I’ve had MS since 2014.

I have had multiple sclerosis since 2014 and for the last four years I have been living in a care home but I am due to be moving to my own home shortly. I have been given a personal budget by the council in order to employ carers to look after me.

As it is being funded by the council, I am very restricted in what I can offer in terms of an hourly rate. Therefore, I wondered if you could assist me with advising where to look for carers. I can’t use an agency as there would be agency fees to pay on top of the hourly rate that I am able to offer. I have tried website that advertise for carers and evenplaces such as Facebook with groups specifically aimed at finding carers, however the negativity and the abuse my simple advert attracted was disgusting and left me wondering if there are any good people left in the world.

As such I would be very grateful for any assistance you would be able to provide.

Facebook a good place to start. Rather than the “Things For Sale” Groups, if you have a “Recommends” group that would be better to make your enquiry as more service-based rather than product-based.

Hi Gemmajwebb,

A bit of a controversial answer but I manage an Independent retirement building where some residents have outside Care companies. The Managers of these sort of buildings know who the good agencies are. It might be worth ringing up and asking if they know of any good ones they recommend, if I received a phone call from you, I would certainly help. Also check CQC ratings/reports on the Internet.

I wish I could help with your question but I just wanted to say how awful it was to read about the online abuse you received. Unfortunately I read so many hurtful, ignorant and un empathetic comments these days it makes me wonder what in the hell went wrong in our society for people to be like this. :cry:

I don’t know if they would be able to help but you could try phoning the MS Society Help Line ( the number is on the main website under Support and Community )

As for online abuse - if you can then try to pity the authors! They are just a small percentage of society who have little in their life and little to offer but get some sort of sad satisfaction from trying to upset and belittle others. Bit pathetic really
