Emotions

having quite intense counselling (not to do with the m.s.) and it’s causing me to be very emotional at times. Alongside this emotional upset (can’t think of another term for it!) I have had quite a severe m.s. attack - new symptoms etc.

Have always been a bit sceptical when people talk of emotional/personal problems triggering an attack/relapse but perhaps I was wrong.

Maybe attack would have happened anyway?

Interested to hear of other people’s thoughts if they have had a similar experience.

Hi

I had an emotional storm a few months after my diagnosis.

My MS nurse phoned (about something else) and i was in floods of tears (could easily have been fits of giggles).

She gave it a name, lability and I was being labile!

It must be a recognised symptom since my MS nurse knew all about it.

she asked if I had any anti-depressants.

I had been on Citalopram but had run out. So ordered a repeat prescription.

As for it triggering a relapse, it probably did in your case.

Hope this helps

xx

Hello Anonymous,

I’m sorry you’re having such a rotten time.

I’m not really sure if emotions can actually cause a relapse. I’ve had surges of old symptoms when I’ve been stressed out; however, you say you’re getting new symptoms so it does sound like it could be a relapse, in which case I think you should contact your MS nurse as soon as you can and get a professional opinion.

Have you found the MS Soc’s page on emotions? There’s a lot to read, including some pdf downloads. Here’s a link… https://www.mssociety.org.uk/about-ms/signs-and-symptoms/mental-health/other-mood-and-behaviour-changes

Hope things improve soon

Ben
