Embarassing Question

Hi All.

Just wondering if anyone is or has had the same problems that i am experiencing at the moment.?

I’m not yet diagnosed with MS, so far i have a diagnosis of CIS.

However this last 2 weeks, i am really struggling with constipation, which i have never suffered from before. Its got to the stage where i have to take a very mild laxative every night. The only medication i am on at the minute is Pregabalin, which i don’t think causes constipation.

Hoping this isn’t going to be an ongoing symptom :frowning:

Hi Rosie, It all depends on which drugs you have to take, some do make you. Constipated whereas others don’t. I take Pregabalin but I don’t think it causes constipation. You may just be prone to it. Have you read the leaflet that comes with them, that should tell you. Hope this is of help to you. Janet x

hi Janet

Thanks for the reply…no Pregabalin doesn’t cause Constipation, the leaflet certainly doesn’t mention that it does.

i had heard that this can be a symptom of MS, and as this is a problem i have never had before, i was just wondering if it affects anyone else with MS.

I would be interested to know what anyone else does to help alleviate the problem as really don’t want to rely on laxatives.

Hello Rosie I have a problem with constipation. Your right! It can be a symptom of ms. I take take a lot of meds though, including codeine. I take movicol which helps…its a powder that you mix with water. Not too bad, tastes slightly of lemons  Take care x

Looks like it must be as it is on this website http://www.mssociety.org.uk/what-is-ms/signs-and-symptoms/bowel/managing-constipation

Hiya

Pregabalin can cause constipation for some people - like me - when I tried it for 8 months. Also many other things can cause this including good old MS. Pregablin can ‘dry’ you out a bit so to combat it make sure you have around 1.7 to 2 litres of water every day. Also the usual good fruit and fibre diet stuff too.

yep unfortunately here too  but i take big amounts of codine though hopefully that is changing too but i also have a very slow gut which is being investigated as the prep (strong lax , Picolax) they gave me supposedly works in 30mins to 1 hr and mine started working 4 days later so dont yet know if this is part of the MS or something else at present, hope it eases for you soon

Thanks for the replies guys, i didn’t realise Pregabalin caused constipation to be honest, but i guess i’m just one of the unlucky ones. I drink loads of water daily, as well as fruit and my diet also has loads of fibre in it too…

guess the next resort will be a stick of dynamite . i don’t really like taking laxatives every day, but needs must i’m afraid.

Not yet diagnosed with MS, but waiting to be referred onto MS Specialist Neurologist, whenever that will be. i will mention this newest symptom to them

Hi Rosie,

I’ve only had it once since dx (and after steroids) and it was horrible. Laxatives aren’t good for you in the longer term, but your GP might be able to prescribe you some Movicol (as Blossom suggested). You can just add it to water or juice and it’s quite gentle on your tummy, it just ‘bulks out’ the stool with fluid to make it easier to pass.

Hope it improves soon hun.
