Embarassing Problem - Breaking Wind Involuntarily

Anon, are you taking any medication which might cause this to happen ?

[quote=Anonymous]

I have an extremely embarassing problem as a result of MS. I have slight issues with bowel control, and although pelvic floor exercises, bowel training and watching my diet has really helped a lot with controlling bowel motions, I cannot do much about breaking wind. Involuntary farting isn’t a lot of fun, and with a bad case of flatulence, it would really be better for me to be on a remote hillside somewhere.

Does anyone have a tip for a medication or remedy so that I can at least control it during romantic evenings with my loved one?

Hello anon

Just want you to know, that no one on this link was laughing at you. I hope when reading through the messages you will have noticed that you have been given some good advice. We have also shared some of our embarrassing stories in the hope of helping you see that your not alone in having this problem. We were actually laughing at ourselves

I personally find if you get too stressed, this can make things worse with the bowels. Try and find ways to relax in general…I find meditation to be helpful.

If this is a new relationship, I can apprecitate this will be more awkward. If the relationship is well established I would suggest its something you could discuss with your partner. Because the reality is anon, everyone at some time suffers with flatulence.

I hope your ms nurse can suggest some preventitive measures for you.

I won’t be making any more comments on this link

I wish you well anon…take care

Thank you for all of the replies and particularly the one suggesting charcoal tablets - that sounds like a plan! I often find farts hilarious too! It’s just that, at some point, or in some situations, it just isn’t funny any more - I mean, if no one knows I’m the culprit, it’s fine, but if they do, and I didn’t do it on purpose, it’s a whole different story! For example walking around the office going parp! as you walk is NOT amusing, or standing talking to your manager and breaking into a cold sweat because you know you are about to gas them is also not something I chuckle about later.

Thanks again for all your messages - I’ll let you know if the charcoal tablets work! Until then, I’ll try to fart unobtrusively or, failing that, merrily and unapologetically.

Oh, I can relate to this one and sometimes it is funny if I’m at home or in a crowd so it isn’t obvious it is me. But when you are at work and there are only two of you and you are squeezing your bum cheeks so hard and nothing is going to prevent the foul gas escaping it really isn’t so funny then. I wish I had the courage to apologise and explain that it’s the MS that makes me so disgusting but I try to pretend it didn’t happen even though neither of us can breathe for the noxious fumes! I hold a Cake Break every year at work and pin up a list of symptoms as a subtle hint and I hope that most of my colleagues that knew me before my MS days know that I never did this before.

I find if I’m constipated, the farts are far worse. As my nurse said when I discussed it with her ā€œThere’s a distinct smell to constipation, isn’t there?ā€ However apart from eating more fruit and veg, she didn’t have much advice for me. At least if I have ā€˜been’ I can be fairly confident they won’t be quite so deadly.

I wish you luck, anon, and if you do find a cure, please share it.

Tracey xx

Hello there, I just want to post my’ penny worth’ (no pun intended!!) I can relate to you Anon and really admire your courage in posting this. You see, I also have found involuntay passing of wind to be very embarrassing and I always seem to blush which really ā€˜blows my cover’ …

Anyway, did you ever hear the one about the lady who went with her husband to church one Sunday? well, they sat right up there at the very top row and all of a sudden she whispered into his ear 'O my Gosh Tom, I’ve just let out a silent one what should I do?" And Tom replied… ā€œI think you should get new batteries for your hearing aid!ā€

Ro - that made me laugh!!!

I still have to try the charcoal tablets, but lately it hasn’t been much of a problem at all. Stress does indeed seem to have a negative effect - what Blossom says about this is true I think.
