My gran has MS and we’ve been discussing with other members of my family to get her for a gift. My grandpa has unfortunately been very unwell which causes him to travel back and forth to the hospital. This has struck an idea about how will she be able to contact us. She has arthiritis in her left writing hand and she is very deaf. I am basically looking for advice to see if anyone could give me some help about what sort of electronic device would be great such as an Ipad, Tablet or a phone. Just so it’s easy access for her but also easy to understand. If you could help that would be fantastic. Thank you
I use an iphone 5. Can’t be without it now. With Siri (the voice recognition software) and dictation I don’t have to worry about typing and I can increase the font size so even my dodgy eyes can see the text.
The reminders function has replaced my very dodgy brain and I have set it up to sync automatically from my reminders and calendar on the phone to my computer so I get my appointments whichever gadget I am using. If other family members also have iPhones then text messaging is free via imessage.
Best idea though is probably to take her to one of the good gadget shops and let her play with a few. It really comes down to personal preference. I prefer the iPhone as it is small enough for me to hold in one hand comfortably while I text etc. The androids all have too big a screen for me and cause my hand to cramp up and I find the layout and settings far easier than the android devices.
If you buy it on a plan through a telco it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
Hope you find one that suits her… what a nice gift
An iPhone 5, or 4S (slightly cheaper than an iPhone 5)would be good. Bear in mind, that if your Gran suffers from anything that effacts her ability to use a keypad, then most phones may prove difficult to use. I know my own mother, who has arthritis, finds a phone keypad very difficult. The same is true of my father in law. An iPad has a much larger keypad. You need to bear in mind that in order to use either product usefully you need to have iTunes installed on a PC or Laptop. And to use the Internet from home you are best off using WIFI, although you an get away with 3G, depending on network cover. If I were you I would go to somewhere like Vodafone or Orage, and then somewhere like Curry’s or PC World, and ask to see all the options.
