Dysphagia

Good afternoon everyone. I am new to the group but have been diagnosed 27 years. It’s now at the secondary progressive stage.

I wondered if anyone knew much about Dysphagia. Recently I have been coughing and I cough so hard I gag and heave, sometimes it makes me bring up clear phlegm. I don’t choke when I swallow so can eat and drink ok, but just this is becoming a daily occurrence for me. I’ve had a barium swallow tests and chest X-rays and there seems to be nothing wrong there, which makes me thinks it may be this.

Any thoughts would be really helpful, thank you.

@sallybevan1 I’ve had problems with eating over the years since my diagnosis. It’s never been permanent. I ought to have kept more of.. well, a diary I suppose so I could look back at stuff that has happened over the time since my diagnosis and probably before that when I had my first symptoms. My issue is with bread. I’ve been finding it really hard to eat bread at the moment so I’ve stopped eating it. I’ve had difficulty swallowing it so much I think that I’m going to choke. It’s a horrible feeling. It’s been there off and on over the years. I’ve had swallow tests too. They never actually found/saw a problem. Though it’s still happening. The phlegm issues I only get at night for some strange reason. Probably something to do with being horizontal. That’s now becoming a frequent problem. It feels like my mouth is full of sick. Although in essence it’s only a little bit of phlegm. The coughing is something else I get too. I find that quite embarrassing as that often happens when I’m out. Typically on buses! That’s been happening for years too. None of my GP or ms nurses have ever said that it’s dysphagia, but we know that ms sufferers can be prone to it. Wishing you well and hope you get to the bottom of it. If it turns out you have got dysphagia then it might just be certain foods and drinks that causes it. I know mine is bread.
