Do u need a driving licence for a mobility scooter?

Taxi driver told me today that folk in electric wheelchairs do a capability test…do I need one for a mobility scooter??

hiya

i have a powerchair and physio assesed my abilities to drive it before i was allowed out of my drive. also had to have ok from optician. to go on the bus the company has to see/assess ur chair and ur ability to handle in on ramp and in bus. (i couldnt get to the depot so they brought a bus to me!)

i would hope a scooter would have similar rules-cos they are faster than a powerchair-but i really dont know.

will read any answers u get with interest!

ps capabilty test is different from driving test/license

When I was planning to get an electric wheelchair through Wheelchair Services, I had to have both an indoor and outdoor assessment to ensure I could handle it OK. I ended up getting a chair through Motability, and got to try the chair out indoors first to make sure it met my needs. If you bought one privately you wouldn’t need an assessment. You don’t need to pass a test for a wheelchair or mobility scooter, but you need to display a tax disc if they’re Class 3. It would also be wise to try before you buy. Hope this helps. Heather

No you dont need a driving licence, but if you have a class 3 scooter you need a tax disc, but this is free. Class 3 is one that does more than 4 miles an hour, and entitles you to go on the road.

Hope this helps.
