After being diagnosed with ppms I now use walking sticks and on bad days a wheelchair I find alot of people can be quite rude and have no patience is it just me ?
I have never encountered this when out, quite the opposite. I try not to run them over with my wheelchair lol. but overall i have to say i get smiled at and before i used my wheelchair and was out with my stick and lost balance i would joke OOPS I NEED to put more water in my whiskey and it would make people smile. I never took my illness seriously to be honest it is what it is, and a lot of people now are disabled.
maybe you have just been unlucky. xx
I donāt use a wheelchair and only use crutches in the house when I feel unsteady on my feet but my mom uses a mobility scooter and i have noticed when I go out with her that people are always polite!
Iāve been using a wheelchair now for over 15 years, I can only recall a couple times when someone was a bit daft. But other than that, Iāve only ever been met with politeness, kindness & helpfulness. Itās not uncommon for people to walk past in the street and say hello (which often confuses me - with our memory, Iām never sure if itās someone I know but have completely forgotten, or if theyāre just being friendly). Try smiling at people, theyāll probably smile back.

People are mostly kind and helpful when I`m out and about. But I always say please and thankyou when asking or offered help. I do ask quite a bit as stuff is often out of reach. Non disabled folk often go about their business, rushing hither and thither, not even noticing our existence. Poor soulsā¦such busy people!
People in general can be really THICK and donāt comprehend what it is to be less than perfect. So yeah, when I was using sticks and could not stand I wd straight out say āExcuse me. I NEED to sit down, I have MSā on a crowded bus or train.
You still got the occacional twat who thought that a reserved seat meant one his laptop as well.
On a train, Iāve had my sone YELL at folks all trying to get on train, while weāre wainting for the ramp to get OFF! So yeah folks can be dense. I develop a tough skin and be just as rude back!
Since I started using my walking stick occasionally, I have found that people are very helpful; holding doors open, offering me chairs and being terribly considerate⦠but then, I work somewhere which is quite civilised. I try not to use my stick if I donāt have to, 'cos I feel like Iām begging for attention or sympathy⦠but when I am slow off the mark, itās very useful - if only as a marker that I may be less rapid and resilient than I used to be! And if people have asked me āOh dear, what have you done to yourself?ā I try to brush it off with āItās just my MS playing up⦠nothing newā¦ā I donāt want to be treated like some rare and delicate specimen - cos Iām not!
Hi all thanks for your posts , I genuinely belive most people are good and kind , apart from the nasty person who kindly called me a spastic , not a very nice thing to do say but I guess he was just having a bad day so hey take it out on someone with a disability a easy target I also have bad days too but I dont go round saying that to people , there are poor people who are alot worse off than me who canāt defend themselves they are the ones I am truly sorry for
Unfortunately some people are like that. But from my own experience ( most of the time) I find people helpful, caring and patient. Lina
Iāve been called and treated a lot worse before my diagnosis.
people can be so nasty.
Linamumof4 thanks people as you said can be nasty yet they can be kind too , itās surprising where kindness comes from sometimes it can be from you least expect it it restores my faith in the human race so a big thanks to those kind caring people among us you know who you are subzero
Hi I agree with Subzero; I have found the majority of people I come across are the good guys. There will always be the odd bad one. Let karma deal with them. xxxxx
Hi, I find around 98% of folk are helpful and kind. But I always remember my manners too, when asking for help. Costs nowt to be nice, does it? Boudsx
I feel its more a case of people are so busy staring at their phones now that they do not notice the public around them. Iām visually impaired and walk with a rollator due to foot drop and on the whole, most people are lovely. Iāve been guided on and off buses and helped in shops. The ones with their faces stuck in their phones donāt see me and I āget in their wayā
BBCās Little Britain mocking the sick and disabled Since āLittle Britainā has be off the airways, Iāve found people more helpful and kind, unfortunately this negative divide and ruin propaganda show is to return - so heaven help us! I think this show was designed to aid the governments general bullying of the sick and disabled welfare āreformā. To turn sympathy into mocking responses. With canned laughter - mocking the sick and disabled Little Britain Little Britain - Andy's Wise Words of Wisdom - YouTube
Hi, I doubt Little Britain was designed
for anything other than laughter. Yes, it is mocking the disabled, but also the gay community and the ignorantā¦made by ignorant people! So just ignore itā¦other people will make their own minds up. Bouds xx
The BBC is generally disgusting and unwatchable. Havenāt watched it in years - yet we still have to pay for their canned laughter bile.
I havenāt experienced anything unfair but do get fed up with being treated like an idiot because of it or people seem to worry they might catch something!!!
Little Britain wasnāt mocking the disabled at all! Those clips were very selective. of you watched the probgramme, Andy wheelchair guy) always got the upper hand - nicking the chocolates, pinching the drink.
