Critical illness claim & medical records

Hello all,

i was was diagnosed with relapsing remitting ms a few months ago & have claimed on my critical illness cover. I’ve had a letter back from my insurer saying my Consultant has refused to give copies of my medical records (including letters) but will supply a 2 page report for a fee.

it now sounds to me that without these records, my claim can’t be processed. Has anyone else had a similar problem & is there anything I can do? Can I ask my consultant for these documents & pass them onto my insurer?

thanks in advance

Emily

That’s probably what the problem is, unless you have given signed consent for your records to be released to the company…

You have every right to your medical records and I’m sure you will write to the Consultants secretary (or Medical records dept) and request same. A phone call will not be acceptable as a security measure.

Thank you. I’ve sent an email to the records department - I would have thought the insurance company would have told me this, they must have the same issues with most claims? Anyway, I’ve asked so will see what happens…

I’m ex-financial services. I applied to my old personal pension company and an old company pension scheme for early ill health retirement and supplied copies of letters about my diagnosis, subsequent issues & MRI’s to both companies and both agreed I could draw on the funds.

I’m sure you have enough correspondence about your MS to satisfy a claim Also, your MS nurse may be able to give you a letter.

Good luck. They make it hard enough for someone who worked in the industry so I can’t quite imagine how tough it is for people outside the industry. Really wish I’d had a CI policy

Good to know  I’m hearing generally positive things about the success of claims it’s just a frustrating process.

yes I’m glad about the CI cover too - funny thing is I was in the process of setting up a new policy when I had what I now know was my first relapse. The company wouldn’t cover me until I had a confirmed outcome of my blurred vision (which I now know to be optic neuritis) . If I didn’t have my first symptom when I did I may have not been covered for a future claim

Sometimes things just happen at the right time.

I cancelled a life assurance policy on the basis I didn’t believe it’d ever pay out, there were issues with my health and underwriting before MS was diagnosed but it was stuff I was seeing the hospital about - it took 2years after diagnosis to agree it was related to my MS. I was paying a ridiculous premium as they’d ‘loaded’ it and yet if something happened to me, it might not pay out to my family!

On brighter side I have now taken early ill-health retirement so at least I’m now debt free. Glad you’re making your claim and I’ve heard of successful cases on here. Good luck and keep us posted
