Could it be MS?

Hi, I’m new here and have been looking for someone to talk to about my symptoms and frustrations for a while. MS has been mentioned to me as a possibility of the cause of my troubles so I’ve come to the MS Society to see if I can find some reassurance or advice.

I’m a 29 year old woman. I had a baby 13.5 months ago and shortly after she was born, I noticed that the left side of my back was numb and I was getting pins and needles a few times a day. Over a few months, it spread further down my back and the pins and needles became more frequent. It was not painful so I tried to ignore it and hope it would just go away. I mentioned it to my GP once after about 7 months and she didn’t know so said it should improve and did nothing. About a month later I went back, again about something else and saw a different doctor so mentioned it again, she didn’t know what the cause might be but referred me to a physio. It took 6 weeks or so to get an appointment with them, in which time the numbness was spreading across to the right side of my back. I saw the physio who said I would need some more specialist assessment and she referred me to the Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (MCATS). It took 6 weeks to get an appointment with them in which time the numbness had spread to my little and ring finger of my left hand. When I saw the woman there, she manipulated me into various positions and said, it was an unusual presentation but possibly a trapped nerve in my neck, so she sent me for an MRI of my cervical and thoracic spine. That was 3 weeks ago. I’m still waiting for the results of this which I should be getting on 8th Jan at my next MCATS appointment.

Over the last 8 weeks since I last saw the MCATS, I’ve been experiencing a numb, heavy left arm a lot of the time (like I’ve been asleep on it). I have significant weakness in that arm and am now struggling to pick up and hold my 13.5 month old. I can no longer open bottles or jars, although my movement is not really affected, just strength.

In the last couple of weeks I’ve also been having occasional pain around the front of my ribs under my bust (on the left again) and twice I’ve had palpitations and dizziness at the same time. I’ve also been getting a tingly feeling in my right temple for a couple of weeks on and off too.

The last 2 days have been horrible. I’ve had pain from the base of my skull, down through my shoulder right down to my wrist. My arm feels constantly numb, heavy and rubbery. I can do very little with it due to lack of strength! I had to resort to going to my GP this morning as it was just too much to bear and paracetamol wasn’t touching the pain.

He manipulated my neck in various positions and that didn’t trigger anything new, it just stayed the same, which he said is not what you would expect with a trapped nerve in the neck. He compared the strength in both arms and noted the significant weakness in my left. He thinks that the MRI will not show a trapped nerve (although couldn’t suggest what it might show) but he said when we’ve got the definite results, I’ll have to go back to him and be referred to a neurologist and for some conduction studies.

I’m sorry this is such a long post, it’s nice to write it all down clearly.

If anyone has any advice or similar experience, I’d be grateful to hear from you. Could it be symptomatic of MS?

Thank you for reading.

Natalie

Hi Natalie, welcome to the site

What a hard time you’re having and while looking after a baby!

What you are experiencing are symptoms that are MS-like… but they are also like a whole bunch of other conditions too.

Sending you for an MRI is exactly the right thing for the GP to do… so you are in good hands there and having the right tests.

If they find lesions (scars) showing on the MRI, on you spine or your brain, the GP will refer you to a neurologist who will want to talk about your symptoms, give you a physical examination and do a few other tests. They will then know if they are looking at MS or if they can eliminate MS and look at other conditions.

I’m sorry, it is frustrating getting no clear answers… but keep in mind that your GP is doing the right thing.

In the meantime, try and rest as much as possible with a young child. Take it ‘one day at a time’ and hopefully you’ll have some answers soon.

You will see by reading this forum that MS is NOT the end of the world… so IF you end up with a diagnosis of MS you can still get on with your life and will be given drugs to help with the symptoms.

Also come on here for advice and support… all of us on here know what you’re going through.

Hang on in there… and good luck.

Thank you Pat. What a lovely welcome!

I know it’s not the end of the world. Before the possibility of a trapped nerve was mentioned, the GP had already mentioned MS, so it’s been at the back of my mind for a long time. It was kind of a relief when I was told it was possibly a trapped nerve (even if it was presenting in an odd way) but now the way it’s continuously progressing and never giving me any let up at all, makes me wonder if it is that simple.

It has just spread and worsened day by day for over a year and I feel like I’ve hit rock bottom with it now it’s affecting my baby too because I can’t hold her much (it’s a good job she’s walking now!). I know that it can continue to progress though! I’ve had to call in sick from work today too as I’m a staff nurse on a busy surgical ward and I wouldn’t be able to do my job with the pain and weakness I’m experiencing. I’ve had numbness when at work before and it’s been hard enough but it was nowhere near this bad.

Thank you again.

Hi Natalie, On thinking about it I’m a bit surprised the GP didn’t refer you straight to a neuro. Hope you get an MRI appointment soon. Is it at same hospital where you work? Are you able to pull a few strings to get quick appointment?

I’m not saying this to panic you it’s just the sooner you know what’s going on the sooner you will be able to get some med’s to help.

If you don’t get appointment date in couple of weeks go back to GP and ask if it might be quicker to refer straight to neuro.

Anyway hon let us know when you get appointment.

Hello and welcome Natalie

What a ridiculous runaround you’ve been having! I honestly think that you should have seen a neuro a long time ago - trying to blame progressive, multifocal symptoms on a trapped nerve is not an “unusual presentation”, it’s nonsense :frowning:

The good news is that you don’t have long to wait until you get your MRI results. If I were you, I would have an appointment booked with my GP for straight after - no point in delaying an appropriate referral!

Good luck.

Thank you so much for your replies.

I’m now off sick with this. The weakness is worse than ever in my left arm. I’ve got pain still down my neck and shoulder and now its spread under my arm and under my bust! I’ve also had more episodes of feeling like my heart is racing. I’m a staff nurse on a busy surgical ward and I simply wouldn’t be able to do my job in this state! I never imagined I could have such lack of sensation and such weakness in my arm! I (wrongly) thought only a stroke could cause such a feeling.

Its really getting me down now. I know I shouldn’t moan and people are in a far worse position than me. I’m not even 30 yet and I can’t even pick up my little girl anymore!!

Thanks for reading.

hi nat

you’ve already had replies to your question but i’d like to suggest you ask your gp for referral to occupational therapist.

they’ll help by looking at your home and offer ideas for making life easier.

i was given a little rubber device to help open jars and bottles

plus shower rails and seat

good luck
