Hi, I have suffered from constipation for years and have only recently discussed it with my consultant. I was referred to the bladder/bowel nurse who prescribed cosmocol. I have taken 1 sachet a day for a week now and my problem is when I going to the toilet now it is small, long, pencil like poos. And I need to go several times as so little is coming out each time. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this lovely situation!!
Not exactly the same but I do use Fybogel from time to time and which ‘does the trick’
A cocktail of
- Macrogol (movicol / laxido) sachets
- Docusate sodium (Dulcoease) capsules
- Senna tablets (2x 7.5mg before bed)
- Suppositories
Macrogol is like a lubricant, docusate is a stool softener and senna is a fairly crude purger. I’ll decide when to take what and often just one or two is enough to get things going again. The suppositories expedite the situation if all else fails. Depends how bunged up I’m getting. Can go for days not needing anything but then things can shut down for 3 days. Trouble is, the bowel runs much more slowly these days so any laxative you may take could take a day or so to actually work. Well, apart from the suppository.
Hi,
Yes I have this ‘trouble’ too. .
I was recently diagnosed in March just gone, but have had bowel issues or at least what others term ‘issues’ for years.
As we are all ‘safely anonymous’ on here . I have for about 25 yrs+ gone once a week. Not hard lumpy etc just a ‘Bristol 3’ so in its ‘form and appearance’ not constipated. BUT, whenever ‘medics’ ask they are horrified and something of course must be done.
So, over the years I have tried the lot - and given them all a fair crack of the whip and ALL of them made no difference at all, in fact all but senna and fybogel made them worse.
So, I’ve bitten the bullet and stopped all the ‘suggestions’ and gone back to a once a week sitting with no troubles- if I do feel the need to ‘go’ I’ll just take some senakot if and when needed.
It’s odd, that people feel the need to apologise for the regularity (or otherwise) of their bowels!
Current thinking is more enlightened. The medical profession has acknowledged that we are all different and that anything from 3x a day to once every 3 days can be regarded as normal, as long as there is some regularity. Time was when we were all expected to go daily. The morning constitutional!
I imagine that going weekly concerns the medics due to the risk of faecal impaction and other unpleasantness but if it works for you then fine.
