Does anyone feel really dizzy with cocodomal. I was on 8/somebtjng which was ok ish. Then went to 30/ so finding I’m really dizzy. I’ve cut it out but probably do need it for the pain Any other suggestions or an alternative. I’m seeing my doc in. a month. Saw her yesterday and forgot to mentionit as I had the kids with me as they had a virus too Emx
yes it can make you dizzy, especially at 30mg codiene, its also quite bad for your chest as it supresses coughing. I use tramadol, which spaces you out for a few weeks until you get used to it, but its the first time Ive been pain free for years.
Hi Em,
The’ve never made me dizzy, but I do get a slight hangover effect from codeine, whether in cocodamol, or as neat codeine. And if I take too much (but still within prescribed limits) I get mild hallucinatory effects and lucid dreams if taken at night. So they’re not ideal, and I have to use them very sparingly. I sometimes have to decide which is the lesser of two evils - to live with the pain, or take the codeine and live with the side-effects.
I still find it the most effective painkiller I have available to me, but the side-effects mean I’m more reluctant to use it than I would wish, so the pain has to be really quite bad.
Interestingly, today I thought I’d taken some, but forgot. Still got side effects! So some of it might be in my mind - I expected side effects, so there were some.
I don’t know about things you can take instead. I find paracetamol by itself does diddly squat, Paracetamol and Ibuprofen (an allowed combination) is better than nothing, but still not as good as codeine + anything.

Hi, I wil never take cocodamol ever again.
I was given them for my mystery side pain and boy! I had the worst dizzy dos of my life!
luv Pollx
Hello em I used to take co-codamol 30/500 and I too had problems with dizziness. I now take paracetamol and codeine phosphate as separate tablets at different times. I always take the codeine with milk or food, which seems to help with nausea…another problem for me. Take care Noreen xx
Hi if you are taking two of the 30/500 tablets, would it be worth taking one co-codamol and one paracetamol? 60 of codeine can be a lot for some people and taking regularly can have an accumulative effect x
I used to take cocodamol for a condition unrelated to MS that caused unpredictable and variable levels of pain. It is possible to mix cocodamol with ibuprofen but speak to your GP before you try it and don’t be surprised if he isn’t enthusiastic (mine wasn’t but agreed I could try it). My GP recommended taking the cocodamol and ibuprofen 2 hours apart but I found that more than about half an hour between doses had no effect - I might as well not have bothered with the ibuprofen. If I took 1 cocodamol with 1 ibuprofen they were much more effective at reducing the pain and the effects lasted longer, so overall I took fewer painkllers.
My pain also responded well to a TENS machine and again my GP was doubtful but said it couldn’t hurt to try it and I am so glad I did. Some days I used TENS alone for pain relief, other days I still needed painkillers but the TENS helped.
I always had to have some food and a decent drink with my cocodamol - a couple of biscuits or a cereal bar as a minimum - otherwise it made me feel sick.
Speak to your GP about trying ibuprofen with your cocodamol. I wouldn’t try it without medical supervision.
Yes, I can’t stand straight or still, as my balance goes completely on this med. I find it really hard to manage pain, so not much help with positive reccomendations
cocodamol tends to make me feel really sick and dizzy, same with tramadol. I can’t take any NSAIDs due to a bleeding disorder, so they doctors gave me Nefopam. It works for the pain and doesn’t make me feel ill, it just not prescribe very often so a lot of people haven’t heard of it
Hi thanks everyone for your advice. I first started taking the 8/500 in November put the diZiness down to cocodemal but turned out it was the start if a major relapse. Started taking again and I was ok was upped to 30/500 2 of them. And iboprufen 4 hrs later . Maybe I need to play about with timings. Or take one and iboprufen. I don’t eat breakfast so maybe time them with meals too X
