I take omeprazole and baclofen. Started pregablin last week. No real effect yet. Was prescribed co-codamol by GP. I sometimes suffer from constipation. Apparently, co-codamol is bad for constipation. Took it for 3 days. Bunged me up completely so I stopped. Neuro said " no, no, no" when he’d heard that I’d been prescribed co-codamol.
It is a very effective painkiller for ‘ordinary’ pain. Like other opiates, codeine can be awfully constipating, but I guess that most effective drugs are a bit of a trade-off between benefits and unwanted side-effects!
I posted the following on another page, yesterday. I’ve highlighted the pertinent bit here.
I was on Gabapentin, which didn’t work after a while.
Changed to Pregabalin which didn’t work.
I’m now on Amitriptyline which does; if you don’t count the top-up with Co-codamol 30/500.
Baclofen for the spasms. Stopped that because side effects included turning me into Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde.
Replaced with Dantrium which turns my legs to jelly.
Cilatopram for depression.
Vit B Strong Compound for energy release.
I stopped Cilatopram yesterday because I was getting hyperactive. At 9pm I pulled the handle off a cupboard. I then exploded like a hand-grenade in a dustbin. Perfectly good Valentine’s Day ruined in 15 seconds. Got the flowers and everything. Back on Cilatopram by 9.30pm.
It’s a shitty day when you try so hard, for so long, to be on your best behaviour and then that happens. Gill never even batted an eyelid.
She’s my heroine. I thought I was the strong one; but its her keeping us together now. There is a God. (What’s this? No emoticon for God?)
A.
PS. I’m seeing the Continence Nurse about my constipation this afternoon (lucky woman).
hi albrecht durer, lovely to get your message and sorry for not replying sooner. i hope your appointment with the continence nurse was successful. take care, fluffyollie x
Hi, my wife took co-codamol for a number of years and it badly affected her white cell level. Fortunately she stopped taking them and her white cell count is now back to normal. Just be aware if you do take it for long period of time.
Hi, I take co-drydamol for the pain. My nick name for a while was Dr Pam as I always had them in my bag or coat. They do some wierd things sometimes but without these I don’t think I could get up in the morning. As I said to my lovely GP, more please, I am not addicted to the painkillers I’m addicted to not having pain! He states that I am fine taking these with Gabapentin and as the pain killers enable me to be really well (hide the pain a bit), he is happy that they are efficient for my needs. My dose is 500/10 mg twice, up to four times a day. Rarely do I need this amount. I believe this is a low dose and as time goes on, I know it will need to be increased.
They do cause constipation and I take Buscopan which puts all things normal. I don’t eat bread unless I do down the shop for one bap as I find the medications and wheat products make me look like I have a football belly and I think the body slows down digestion with some of the medications.
I also found that for me, it is not wise to eat kiwis or citrus around the time of taking co-drydamol. I also read after an unfortunate episode, that grapefruit is also wise to stay away from at pain killer time, as there is something in the metabolic link which transports these type of fruits round the body, that can affect how the pain killer is digested. Not good.
So I eat my fruit and celery type foods early in the day. Hope this helps. We are all so different and searching for answers.
