Claiming DLA when undiagnoised

At the moment I have been told probable MS and been told Its a waiting game. I am not well enough to work at the moment but we are struggling financially and my husband is torn between working overtime if he can or being at home to help me. Know it could be years before I get a final firm Dx. Anyone on here who is in Dx but getting DLA? Thanks

Hi Apple pad,

I’m not a DLA recipent (never applied).

However, my understanding is that diagnosis (or lack of it) has nothing to do with the decision. It’s purely about how you are affected, not what the name of it is, or may be.

12 things that don’t affect your right to claim Disability Living Allowance.

  1. You’re getting any other benefits - Disability Living Allowance will be paid on top.
  2. You’re working.
  3. Your partner works.
  4. You have savings.
  5. You have not paid any national insurance contributions.
  6. You don’t consider yourself to be disabled - Disability Living Allowance is for people with long term health problems which affect their everyday activities.
  7. You’ve been told by a doctor, nurse, care worker - or anyone other than a welfare rights worker - that you won’t get Disability Living Allowance. Eligibility for Disability Living Allowance is a legal question, not a matter of medical - or any other - opinion.
  8. You live alone and no-one is providing care for you.
  9. You already have someone, a partner for example, providing care for you.
  10. You don’t want anyone to provide care for you.
  11. You’ve been turned down before.
  12. You do not want to spend money on personal care: you can spend Disability Living Allowance on anything you wish.

Hi Apple Pad,

I am not dx yet, I have put in a claim for DLA, and been turned down, and then I put in for a reconsideration…and turned down again.

I am now going for an appeal…lets see what happnens this time…fingers crossed.

I would say go for it…you’ve got nothing to lose.

Wendy.

Hi,I retired on ill health in 2000, but put in a claim for DLA before that. it can be claimed whilst working. It is not means tested.

I had no dx when I claimed. so go ahead and get a claim in yeh?
