Can MS come and go over a period of days?

Hello, I have recently over the last week been experiencing some random symptoms that I’m unsure what they are. Over the last couple of weeks I have had a weak arm, I have put this down to carrying my toddler around a lot and general mum activities as I am left handed. On the Sunday I felt totally fine and then Monday and Tuesday I had periods of total weakness and feeling shaky. The Tuesday night I felt totally okay again ( I had taken some multivits with Iron), but I am back to feeling weak intermittently again. I can physically lift my son, but feel I have no energy to do so. I am getting to see a doc later, so hoping to get my blood taken and see if I have a deficiency. I have had no symptoms in the past that I can recall. I do have extremely heavy periods and night sweats, and someone mentioned low iron to me? My question is really is can MS symptoms come and go over a period of days, or do they start off slowly, get worse and get better? This feeling of weakness is horrible and I’m unable to carry out my usual daytime activities. Thankyou for listening. X

you will hear all diferent things as to how people get diagnosed and to what their symptoms were at the start and then until diagnosis.

the symptoms you describe could be so many things i seriously dont think you should worry yet about MS!

The iron tablets are a good idea also maybe try a good b vitamin as well also vitamin C at this time of year. having a little one is draining and can leave you feeeling crook. also maybe check blood sugar levels? the shaky feeling could be that.

as for MS symptoms every ones different and each person will experience not only different symptoms but there are 4 types of MS all in relation to the progression of MS and how it first manifests.

hope that the GP has some answers x

Hi there, The most common type of MS, relapsing remitting, means exactly that it comes and goes - but NOT usually several times in one week! What happens with me is I tend to get ill quite quickly (literally overnight, once) but then get better much more slowly. Although there’s some variation in how I feel in-between, I wouldn’t say I alternate between rubbish, and completely fine, in the same week. I might get the odd bad day, for no apparent reason, but in general, it doesn’t turn on and off like a light. I do think it’s a bit premature to be thinking about MS after only a couple weeks, and no visit to the doctor yet. Is there something in your family history that makes MS a suspect? It might be almost anything, at this stage. Tina

Thankyou so much for your replies. I hope I haven’t come across as belittling MS as an illness in any way. It just worries me that I have had these strange weak feelings in my arm that don’t seem to relate to injury or overuse. These feelings then spread to the rest of my body. I woke up this morning and could hardly walk as I felt so weak, yet this has improved over today and I feel a lot better now even though I’ve hardly ate a thing as my appetite has gone . I think I am also getting anxious about it which is causing me to wake in the night with a racing heart and twitchy muscles. I know it could be one of many things. It does seem odd though that I’m alternating between extremely weak and fine so quickly? Thanks for your help.

Hi Anon,

This could be absolutely anything.

Please try not to worry. You have not belittled ms at all.

You sound very anxious about this and it could be something as simple as anaemia. Your anxiety will only make things worse. This could be something very easily treated.

Your gp will probably do blood tests as a starting point.

Do you have other symptoms? This does not sound like ms to me but i could be wrong.

what made you think of ms?

Let us know how you get on.

best wishes

Hello, I have woke up feeling very weak again this morning in my left arm and leg after a bad nights sleep. I saw the doctor yesterday who was very thorough, she has ordered blood tests and would like to get an MRI done for me, think it would help put my mind at rest hopefully. I have a mild tremor when I read at night in both my hands which was what I noticed first. I also have noticed the calf muscle in my left leg contracts a lot when I’m sitting still. A lot of these things I am putting down to anxiety as I had a panic attack the other night. It’s just the weak arm and leg that are worrying me. I am in good health usually so all these things have knocked me for six. I have a small family, we were getting all excited about Christmas and I find all I’m thinking about is these symptoms now. :frowning:

I meant to say that I first thought of ms due to both the weakness I’m feeling and the leg and arm problem. Also the fact that it comes and goes.

Your doctor sounds very helpful. At least he/she is taking you seriously.

Try not to worry. Easier said than done i know but try to stay calm while they investigate what the problem is. There could be something causing these problems that is easily treated.

Take care
