Can I change my neurologist?

I have a neurologist who is not interested in my symptoms and dismisses them as not MS related. This is frustrating as symptoms are debilitating and my GP tells me to go back to neurology. I am on Tecfedira for relapsing remitting MS.
Please can anyone advise how to change neurologist?

Hi @janetoliveives
Welcome. I’m not sure if it’s still available, but isn’t there provision for “patients’ choice” on the NHS, so you can have access to a 2nd doctor’s opinion?

It might well be you’d have to change NHS trust, I did b4 when I moved my care to a trust closer to my workplace, my neurologist back then also worked in both trusts.
Good luck,
JP

Hi there, does your neurologist ever explain why he/she thinks they are not MS related or provide any idea about what the cause might be ?

You can definitely switch neurologists, if you have insurance, you could call them and ask for other specialists. Your GP might also be able for recommend a person that is more profuse in their assistance.

You absolutely can. Speak to your GP about switching neurology departments; it might be worth researching your nearest hospital with a good one (so check out websites, look at consultant profiles to see if any specialise in MS). I switched from a ‘local’ hospital to a large London one (albeit a few years ago now), I asked my GP to refer me and that was that. Things might take a while, but go for it if you’re really not happy.
