Buying a mobility scooter

I’m about to buy my first mobility scooter and I’m looking for an unbiased opinion of the CareCo AirLite X Travel Mobility Scooter. It seems perfect for what I need - just outside pavement use for short journeys, no arms on the chair (I don’t want to slouch!) etc. Does anyone have experience of using this scooter? Is it any good or are there better options?

Hi Janet,

I’ve got two mobility boot scooters at the moment, bought them both second hand so little choice.

The one I use most is a Day strider 2 and is about 6 years old. I’ve got a hoist in my Motability car so it goes everywhere with me. It’s been playing up so I’ve lost confidence in going very far and the motor can’t be serviced so I decided to order a new one.

Lots of research,.as the scooter has to be able to fit in the boot of my estate car so I look at dimensions too. I also wanted a small scooter that was able to go indoors as well as outdoors.

I’ve gone for a Scout Drive in blue. Expecting it any day now.

My Day strider to go forward I push a paddle with my right thumb. Can get a sore thumb so I’ve gone for a delta handle where you just grip the paddle against the handle. The Airlite has similar to that.

Wanted a good range Scout does 10 miles. Airlite 7 miles.

Wanted airline acceptable batteries - both have those.

I like arms on my seat but it’s personal preference. The arms are very easy to take off and put on.

From what I can see most boot scooters are very similar in design. So if you like the Airlite then great.

Don’t forget that if you have MS you get any equipment VAT free, does make quite a difference.

Having a scooter changed my life, I now go off on jaunts, holidays and shopping on my own.

Good luck

Jen

Hi Jen,

Thanks for the advice. I can’t believe how many different scooters are on the market but you’re right, they are all basically the same design. I think the problem is I’m a bit spoilt for choice so I need to just make a decision and go for it as I can well believe a scooter would make life a million times easier for me.

Good luck with your new scooter.

Best wishes,

Janet xx

Having a scooter made such a difference for me, back in 2000. I had a bigger one than the one you want.

It was a 4 wheel Shoprider Sovereign. It wasnt a lightweight but gave me many years of great trouble free service.

Hope you get the same.

Hi Janet43, I’ve got a Pride GoGo Elite, my carers break it down really easily to go in a car and it’s also great for trips around my village. Its given years of good service and the only parts have been new batteries. Hope you find something that suits you Abs x

I have no knowledge of this model, I hope you find a supplier that lets you compare a variety of models before you commit yourself.

good luck
