I have been going for several appointments and tests which all point to the fact that I am not emptying my bladder properly and isc has been mentioned several times. I went to see a urology consultant today and he wants me to go under a general anaesthetic and stretch my bladder??? I am now totally confused has anyone else had this done? I am getting really desperate as this problem is having a huge impact on my quality of life. I tried to ring my nurse for some advice but she is on annual leave. Any answers please x
I’m sorry but I don’t know about the bladder stretching but in the last couple of months I have started ISC. It has drastically improved the quality of my life and basically give me my life back. I was also really desperate. Perhaps your GP could help with some info or failing that, ring the urology guy’s secretary and ask if he could explain it in more detail for you. Teresa xx
Thanks Teresa, I will make necessary phone calls tomorrow. I am not convinced I should be having this op done. He seemed to know very little about MS, and I don’t feel very confident about his decision. Karen x
Yes, it’s tricky when the doc knows little about MS. I think I might share your lack of confidence if it were me. Teresa xx
start the isc soon before you get infections.
i’ve been struggling to do the catheters because i’ve got cystitis yet again.
going to the continence nurse tomorrow and she is going to do the catheter for me

Hi Carole and Teresa, is it only a continence nurse that can show you how to self catheterise ? X
Or a uro/gynae nurse. My continence nurse was absolutely wonderful and was great at teaching me what to do. I couldn’t praise her enough. I was so desperate by the time I saw her and was so grateful for her help! Teresa xx
Thanks Teresa, I will ring her tomorrow as well ! X
Hi, does he mean urethral dilatation? I had this done under GA about four times because I was having problems starting to wee. This was before ms reared its ugly head. This procedure did help for a short while but the last time I had it done it didn’t help at all. My urologist admits now we know about the ms that these procedures where probably a waste of time. As already suggested I would call the urology secretaries to get a clearer picture of what he plans to do, from my experience they are usually quite helpful!. Try not to worry about isc, once you get the right catheters for you it eventually becomes second nature - a struggle at first but definitely worth persevering with for the benefits it gives you. X
Hi Lilbil, yes I think that is what he said, I was so taken aback when he mentioned a GA I didn’t really take it in. I was expecting him to say that I would have to isc which I wasn’t really worried about. I will take everyone’s advice and make some calls. Thank you. Karen X
