Benefits

Hi all, I’m after some advice on claiming benefits,

the is near when I may have to give up working.

not sure what sort of benefits you can claim, means tested or not?

is there some basic payment you get ?

Then universal credit on top ?

when the time comes, I have some idea if I can afford to eat or not.

many thanks rob

Google for welfare rights in your town for the phone number and ring them for advice or to make an appt with them.I find them very helpful, they know there stuff.

Local CAB Office. Remember, if you don’t ask you don’t get.

Hi, Try the web site Turn2u they can advise you what you can claim and how to do it. I used them and they were helpful. You can claim PIP but you have to go through a lot to get it. I have it at the moment but others have found it very difficult to get. You are suppost to get help with Council Tax Support and Housing benefit but only if you are on a low income (they are both means tested, I think they are now through universal credit too). You can get a Blue Badge through your local council too. If you look on the MS Societies web site it also gives tips on what you can get. It’s not a lot though. I do not know why people think disabled people are loaded as we aren’t. Hope that helps.

WARM HOME DISCOUNT. this gives you 140.00 towards your electricity bill (you can change it to gas). Your supplier has to be in the scheme through the government its amazing how many people are not getting it.

Your supplier if they are in the scheme can work it all out for you. its closed now for march but a new one will open for autumn. there is a broader criteria which can catch more people i got it because of that. being a pensioner on a low income, and disabled and on pip.

so well go for it. but like i said its closed for now. there are often hidden benefits no one knows about.

This subject needs to be a Sticky and I wonder why it already isn’t? The Benefits System is so secretive and to get answers to what a person is entitled to is a massive No No. WHY? My view is it’s all about saving money. IF YOU DON’T ASK YOU DON’T GET.

It hard enough having MS but when people stop you helping others it makes it worse! What is the point of this forum if not for helping people with MS? It is not about sharing thoughts about football teams!

Hello Anon, the MS Society employ a Benefits Adviser. Their Helpline number is 0808 800 8000

Good luck.
