Hi. This is the first time ive posted. I have RRMS. I have Ocrevus infusions and take gabapentin daily. Ive been prescribed amitriptyline to take alongside it. Has anyone had both together? How did it make you feel?
Hi Debs
I’ve been on both at the same time for fibromyalgia pain and only had a problem with the ami in the day. They zonked me so badly I didn’t know which way was up. I was taken off gabapentin because my gp said taking the two (gabs and ami) together was no longer recommended. But I know a couple of people who are still on both and he isn’t the most helpful gp at my practice so .
I only take the ami’s at night. They are meant to help me sleep and control my pain which, with fibromyalgia, can wake you every time you move in your sleep. Sometimes they help.

Not an answer to your question, but you might be interested in a leading neurologists view of the drug.

Thank you for putting this up. An interesting read, I definitely need to weigh up pros and cons before it has a lasting impact. Thank you
Thank you so much for your reply. That is my worry that I will end up too out of it. Its difficult enough to function sometimes without the medication making to much worse. Thank you
That was an interesting read Whammel, not to say thought provoking.
A huge thank you for sharing it.
I have a consultation next week and I’ll be asking to get the ami’s reviewed!
I was taking both together and found myself feeling quite groggy in the morning then tired most of the day. I was slowly weaned off them and now on a low dose of Pregabalin, my gp wants to see how I get on with it, take care. Angie
You might find it helpful Debs. I wouldn’t completely discount it as an option based on how others have felt taking it. Many people do great taking naproxen but it makes my husband drool like an elderly St Bernard!
Hi DebsT
I’ve been on Gabapentin and Amitriptyline since 2013, I take the Ami approx. 12 hours before I need to be awake (GP’s suggestion): Currently Gabapentin 1800mg (split into 3 doses) Ami 10mg. After the first few days, I haven’t had any issues with grogginess; I did drop the Ami from 20mg to 10mg because I developed a dry mouth, but that has now resolved now that I am on a lower dose.
Don’t know if there will be any issues if a DMT is added to the mix, will have to see.
It could be beneficial for you, Debs. I wouldn’t entirely dismiss it as an option just because of others’ experiences with it.
Hi Debs i have ppms ! For the past 3 years i have been taking both gabapentin and amytriptaline and have not had any problems taking both ! Only your body gets used and you have to up doses would recomend it as they do help .
Hi Debs, I’ve spms, was on various items for various symptoms including baclofen and Amitriptyline. Moved off baclofen as it was really making me drowsy the next day and can live with the spinal spasms for now. Now on gabapentin and Amitriptyline along with other stuff. Got the headaches at first but they’ve gone now. MS nurse discussed my options with my neurologist. I opted for this and will see how my body responds, else can move from gabapentin to pregablin. Basically though, speaking from my colitis and ms experience, listen to your body, NICE guidelines are generic, your body is unique and it can change over time. Important thing is to keep in touch with your gp and ms nurse.
Hope that helps!
I find amitriptyline to be a really bad drug personally, for me it gives me really bad intrusive thoughts that make me feel useless. So at the moment I’m not taking anything.
