Alemtuzumab - Repeat treatments

Hi All

I took my first course of Alemtuzumab in April.

I went for my 3 month consultation yesterday and was told that the NHS only do 1 repeat treatment whereas all the literature that comes with the pack states a total of 4 annual treatments. My neuro said that only in exceptional cases do patients receive more than 2 doses. I was then hurried out the door before I could ask whether this was purely a funding issue!

I just want to know this:

Which is better from a medical perspective? 2 doses or 4 doses?

Not sure, but I think I’ve heard that the risk of thyroid problems increases above 2 treatment cycles without conferring benefits for those (most) for whom 2 cycles would have done the trick. If so, this would suggest that 2 cycles is the best balance of benefits/risks for most people. It’s one thing to accept extra risk for extra benefit, but there’s no point taking on extra risk needlessly and getting no benefit in return.

Good luck with the treatment.

Alison

Okay thanks Alison - This kind of makes sense
