Just wondered what, if any, guidance is around re how safe it is to travel overseas in the current pandemic if you have MS? I was diagnosed in Oct 2017 with RRMS. Not on any DMDs and not been told to shield. Is there guidance on risks of using airports and flying?
Personal opinion, but why anyone would want to travel abroad at the moment is beyond me.
Obviously unless absolutely necessary.
Totally agree with Jactac. You are vulnerable as you have MS. Also. Why would you get on an aircraft whilst the world is under siege from a pandemic? Please stay home. Keep everyone safe. X
We are all vulnerable with or without MS.
Common sense
Agree with all above, don’t travel unless unavoidable.

ditto…also guidelines vary from country to country. Ask google about any specific country

I wouldn’t be going, can’t understand why anyone would want to, but it’s your choice.
Some people have to travel to see close family abroad for example. Going on the plane is actually pretty safe if you follow precautions like wearing a good mask and not touching your face with unclean hands. My doctor friends who work with covid patients are travelling abroad to see family and have had family come to visit them with no problems as they took correct precautions.
having MS does not put you automatically at higher risk than anyone else, unless you have sever problems with MS. I discussed this with my neurologist at length. I’m no more vulnerable than the next person my age etc. So it really depends on your risk profile. Just another opinion. If you need to travel, don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it. Planes have excellent filters and if you follow advice and DON’T touch your face with unclean hands and sanitise all your things after, the risk is relatively low.
Hello Romad53
A few years ago, I had a relapse which was triggered by a very high fever. Fortunately, thanks to prompt treatment with steroids, I made a good recovery.
I believe a relapse has the potential to be life changing, so I’m taking no chances.

Anonymous, can you please tell me where you get the information that planes have excellent filters? They may well have but they are not changed regularly. Even in the unlikely event that they are changed after every sector, do not be under any illusions that the air you are exhaling is evacuated or filtered from the immediate vicinity of where you are seated BEFORE the natural movement of air within the structure contaminates an area larger than the space you are occupying (around your individual seat).
Fly if you want. You will be spreading disease.
Family members of mine who have worked in aviation engineering for a combined 60 years are not flying and will not fly.
My doctors all tell me we are more vulnerable having MS so obviously there are divided thoughts on this.
Personally I think humans are all vulnerable to this viscious virus. It is just that a lot of people are more vulnerable.
There are few people who HAVE to fly to see family members. They WANT to. Huge difference.
This is a global pandemic.
Too many people just don’t want to acknowledge that. To do that would mean they have to change their behaviour. A lot of people are just too selfish to do that.
I would rather follow doctors and medical advice and that’s what it is. We are altering our lives a lot actually and the pandemic is here to stay. If there’s a need to fly, you just take the precautions you need to take and get on with it. If you don’t need to fly or don’t want to, you can just stay at home.
Also a correctly worn medical mask plus face shield should protect you even if the filter doesn’t. You then need to expose of those things correctly to ensure you’re not contaminating yourself. You would also need to santitise clothes and your bags etc. But it’s possible not to get covid from a flight. I’ve seen it happen a lot believe it or not.
My worst relapses have been caused by me having a virus/high temp.
I agree with all you said. The virus is spreading more because of peoples selfish ways. Its nature fighting back because of the selfish humans destroying the planet.
Jaydee, Totally agree with you. Anonymous no. 2 who is saying not to fly is totally right too. We have a beautiful planet here. The only problem is. Humans are destroying it. Quickly. There are too many of us. Hard to say that but it is true. We are using up too much of the earth’s resources or destroying them. If you look around the world at all the disasters caused by climate change…who did that? Not the animals!! Humans…biggest threat to the planet. Nature is fighting back. In the only way they know how. Naturally. With virus pandemics. If we don’t change our ways, look out.
