Advice please

Hi, can anyone give me some advice please. I am quite new to all this & am taking Tecfidera. I asked my GP to check my B vitamin status & my vitamin D3. She did & said my vitamin B status was ok but, my D3 was lacking so gave me a prescription & said after I had finished them to get a over the counter pill. I have read online that Biotin is good for people with MS to take, should I take it & will it be ok to take with Tecfidera? I think I am losing hair (seems more than usual in my hairbrush) & I feel worried as I had Graves disease & when I took the radio active capsule my hair fell out in clumps & has never grown back. If anyones knows please let me know & how much should I take 300mg day? Thanks Helly.

Biotin is a ‘B’ vitamin, and nothing to do with the D3 that’s been recommended.

Vitamin D3 is sometimes referred to as ‘the sunshine vitamin’ and is made in the system by the action of daylight on skin (…MS sufferers are often low on vitamin D3 from simply not getting outdoors enough). D3 supplements are widely available and quite inexpensive.

Your Neuro should be able to tell you what dosage you need !!

Some people are very ‘pro’ biotin (Vitamin B7) but having tried it for a few months without seeing any benefit at all, I question whether it actually does anything if you already have a reasonably good diet ? I suppose it’s great for some, but does nothing for others. Just another case of ‘try it yourself to see if it does anything for you’ before reaching your own coclusion.

Good luck.

I have been taking high dose biotin on and off for a year. I didn’t feel it helped much with my MS bur it did make my hair thick and shiny and it seems to make my hair and nails grow quicker. Definitely worth a try to help with hair thinning. Do a search for biotin in the search box on this site to find the dosage and where you can get it.

Just a warning - stop taking it a day or two before you have any blood tests. It can mess up the results for thyroid function tests. It doesn’t affect you thyroid function but biotin is used in the tests so they come out wrong if you have taken it on the day of the test.
