Admin job - they require driving licenceI 8

Hi everyone,

I recently had an interview for an administration role. When I first read the job description, it mentioned that a driving licence and access to a car were required. I don’t have a driving licence, and after experiencing optic neuritis, I don’t feel confident about learning to drive. I also didn’t disclose that I have MS. I met and exceeded all other requirements.

The recruiter encouraged me to apply anyway. I was invited for an interview, and it went really well, they told the recruiter they were very pleased with my experience and performance. The only concern was the driving licence requirement, which they weren’t happy about.

While I was there, I spoke to the other administrator in the same office, and she also doesn’t have a driving licence, so I thought there might still be some flexibility. They only need the administrator to make about 5–6 short trips per year, which I could easily manage using public transport instead. I literally live next door to the office, so getting to the office is not an issue. The issue is that (if theu hire me) they want me to drive 5-6 times per year. Note thaf the job is a 1 year contract. I am not in the mood to learn to drive if I feel it’s not safe, and they will end my contract after a year anyway.

I’m feeling a bit frustrated by the situation. Any thoughts? I don’t want to disclose MS. I am now waiting to see if they will eventually offer me the job. I feel that disabled people who can’t drive are discriminated upon even for positions that do not normally require driving.

Best wishes

M

What’s important to them? You being able to drive? Or you being perfectly able to get to remote locations when required and do work for them? If they’re getting hung up on the first then they’re missing the point. Either way, there’s not much you can do about it except hope for the best. I hope that you get good news soon.
