4th catheter change

Good afternoon all.

There have been one or two posts about this subject recently and i thought i would post how I am doing now with my suprapubic cather.

I had it fitted July 4th last year (Independence Day…very apt). It took a bit of getting used to, plus I had a mysterious pain in my lower side, which began that same day as it was fitted.

The pain was reallly bad at times and we went on holiday in September, which was ruined by my pain and in fact, I spent more time in bed than I did at home!

Whether or not this pain was caused by the operation or not, I will probably never know. I am now on pregabalin, which has taken the pain away, but I am awaiting a ct scan on that area.

Back to the spc itself. It has made such a marvelous difference to my life. Prior to having it, I was needing to wee every hour in the day and 3 or 4 times at night. I was making my transfers from my wheelie to the commode, using a patient turner, but my legs were so week and my knees would buckle. This made my life extremely difficult and tiresome. When I went out and needed the loo, my 2 carers would help me stand and turn and there were many falls and in restaurants, we often had to ask the staff to help lift me off the floor…yes it was as bad as that.

Also before the spc, I had chronic utis, which wouldnt clear up, plus retention as well as urgency. Life was the pits!

So now, several months post spc op, I can tell you that if you are at the point of should you go for one or not, then let me recommend it to you. I wouldnt be without mine now.

I am an ample sized lady (started a new diet yesterday!) and my large tum made me wonder if an spc wouldn`t be able to drain well, but it does with no trouble at all.

There you go folks, I`ll shut up now!

something I omitted to say is that my catheter changes are at 6 weekly intervals. A district nurse comes to my home to do it.

The first one was okay…done at 7 weeks…2nd one was done at 12 weeks…it was stuck, as the catheters can form a crust at the wound site, painful and not at all nice…3rd change at 6 weeks was ok and this latest one was okay too. There is always an instant when I go ooo or aaa, but it`s all over quickly!

Well done Poll - glad it all went well. Now you know why l have mine done every 5 weeks.

This is a very exclusive club the SPC’s - but we do welcome new members. lt is life-changing as Poll has explained - ln fact it opens up a whole new world, for most of us that have suffered the indignities of constant wetting and uti’s. lts now my 19th year of SPC. The procedure is not just for lack of bladder control. Often it is done for folk who are wheelchair bound - and unable to transfer to the loo on their own. The Dear Old Queen Mother had one for years. Wouldn’t surprise me if Prince Philip has one now.

We are by Royal Appointment Poll.
