Hi everyone, I woke up one morning and couldn’t feel my left leg and my left arm and neck had acute pain and weakness. Admitted to hospital mri and lumbar puncture confirmed MS. Sent home with exercises to do to try to get mobility back and an appointment in April to see consultant. I am scared my husband has been so supportive but is for now my carer, not what I wanted! so now I do what??
My goodness, what a shocker for you and your family. That is a brutally quick path to diagnosis, something that can more typically take months of longer. Your heads must be absolutely spinning.
April must sound like forever away. Have you had and medications to help you get over this relapse -steroids, for instance? Don’t worry if the answer is no - steroids can help you get better faster, but have little effect on long-term recovery and outcomes, as I understand it.
I think the thing for you to read up about before your consultation is the disease-modifying treatments that can actually alter the disease process itself, ward off relapses and associated disability and keep you as well as you can be for as long as possible. The main part of this MS Society site is a good place to start, as is the MS Trust site.
But the first job is to recover from this frightening relapse. I hope that you are starting to feel better and regain function. As I am sure your medical advisors have told you, relapsing and remitting MS (RRMS), which is what I’m assuming you have, will tend to flare and recede. That’s what I have too. It is a relief to feel that things are on the mend, and I hope that happens quickly and completely for you. Please give yourself time and space to heal. You shouldn’t be in too much of a rush to get back to work, for instance. I have had MS a long time, but if I could speak to myself 20+ years ago, that is what I would say.
And give that man of yours a hug. It’s tough for everyone, and it is good that you can help each other through.
Thank you for that reassurance, I’ve had a course of steroids now just on some pain relief for pain in my arm and left side. Will start to read up on medication plan which following your reply spoke to MS nurse who said that is what the April appointment will be about after they have reviewed my lumber puncture report. So for now accept I have some sort of plan moving forward. Thanks
