- Will the great people on here know.I got well woman vitamins from boots last week then I read on here about biotin ,vitamin d 3 …vitamin b12 and something like thiamine?.so hubby sent to Amazon for them .What dose can I safely take .p s I had asked g p about d3 and she said that it wasn’t expended from Amazon.
Hi
I don’t know about thiamine. I’ve heard that b12 is better if you have it injected rather than pills. This is something that the gp can do. As for d3, the ones I’ve got are 5,000iu. It can be toxic though, so your levels should be checked every now & then.
Not sure what your gp means about Amazon not expending them. I get all my vitamins & supplements from Amazon.

I’m on D3 5000iu, and have been for 4 years, yet my levels have only raised to the normal level, neuro, GP and dietician have all said it can be hard to actually get to toxic levels, in fact but my neuro would like to see my levels higher, far higher, his words were “higher end of African levels” whatever that is ?
I think my current level is 124nmol/l which converts to 49.6ng/ml.
This link might help regarding D3.
As for other vitamins both my neuro & dietician pretty much agree that if your levels are within normal range it’s a complete waste of time trying to boost levels as any supplements taken will be absorbed as waste and leave the body.
From what I understand B12 deficiency is always one of the first thing tested when diagnosed with MS as some people with MS can be deficient but if your levels are within normal range it’s pointless trying to boost your levels.
I know many with MS take Magnesium for cramps/spasms ect, and apparently this does help with these symptoms, but it is also sometimes suggested you have to take Magnesium alongside your D3 otherwise your D3 will not get absorbed .
I put this to neuro, who is a big fan of D3, and he totally dismissed it along with the dietician at my MS clinic.
Hi Rosie
Hope u are doing OK. I have started on a vitamin, mineral, and unsaturated fat regime. Wish I’d started on it before the MS started on me tbh. Though not eating cream and chocolate cake is hell.
Here is a link to a page which talks about the MS biotin protocol based upon the recent study. Biotin really does seem to help. It doesnt say in this article, but I think the study concluded that it is best to have the 300 whatnots (not sure if called mgs) per day in three lots (i.e. 100 in each). I got Forza biotin from Boots online which seems a cheap way of doing it, unless u buy the powder separaretly and measure it out with scales. I know I would get the measurements hoeplessly wrong and end up having 5 times too much or something.
With Forza stuff u can pour the powder out of the little capsules instead of swallowing the capsules and add th amount you need to your food. I add mine to vitamin fortified porridge.
As to Omega 3, the best source (though its not actually a source of course!) I think is flaxseed oil. One bottle will keep you going for a year I think.
Best wishes
Rupert
Vitamin D minimum 5000iu a day will get on Amazon very cheaply. I take 10,000. I’ve been taking Vit D for 10 years.
I take morepa platinum too to get more omega 3 and less omega 6.
The biotin story seems like a fantastic breakthrough for progressive ms. They’ve not seen results in RRMS but amazing results in progressive MS which is about time as there’s not been much so far.
Anything else i would use for symptoms. L -carnitine for fatigue. Magnesium for cramps. Vit B12 if deficient or vegetarian.
Multivitamins shouldn’t be needed if you have a normal diet.
Best wishes x
D3 is also available on prescription.
Not sure about other vitamins, apart from B12 injections IF your deficient !!

Can I ask who advised 10000iu of D3 ?
Usually its your neuro who suggests what dose after taking a vitamin D test, it’s a specific blood test for vitamin D levels , 25(OH)D.
There are 2 types of blood test for Vitamin D, but it’s only the 25(OH)D test that will determine whether you’re getting enough vitamin D.
Do you know what levels of Vit D you are aiming for ?
Have had your levels checked for B12 before supplementing ?
My understanding is that things like vitamins should be taken pure; ie. not mixed up into a multi-viatmin type capsule.
But then… i am not sure of the veracity of this recommendation. I am a ‘take two bottles into the shower’ type chap!
for what it is worth… my neuro recommended that i took at least 4000 UI of D3 daily and he expressed no objection to my taking B12 as well.
i believe you have to try long and hard for vitamin levels to become so high that they are detrimental to your health, as they are all excreted when in excess, through the usual routes. i.e. too much vitamin is pissed out!
the only added consideration is that B12 cannot be readily assimilated into the blood stream via gastric digestion, ie. in the belly. injectable is one option, or one daily pill popped under your tongue until it dissolves is another.
all the best.
This why I’m curious about supplementing with B12 tablets as they are some what hard to absorb, hence your neuro checking your B12 levels and then suggesting B12 injections IF your levels are lower than normal.
I’m all for popping a pill if it will help, in fact I constantly enquire with my MS clinic & GP about adding something to my diet of meds, but when it comes to vitamins, especially B12 & Magnesium they are fairly straight up that because my levels are normal it’s a pure waste of time and money.
I got the impression that you just cannot put your B12 level up anymore than what your own body needs, unless of course your are deficient in it in the first place.
