To gym or not to gym

HI Lisalou

Really pleased to hear you had a good session at the gym. Did you have that glass of wine? You will most certainly have deserved it!!! I resisted the temptation after my gym session but only because it was a school night and didn’t think I could trust myself to stop at one. I fully intend to make up for that this evening.

It was really interesting to read about your leg shaking in certain positions as thats exactly what I.ve been experiencing. It was the physiotherapist who noticed it during my assessment and asked if it happened regularly.

Ann Marie XXX

Hi lisalou just thot of another thing my foot slaps really hard on the ground at times like an elephant lol! And Ann Marie I also get that shaking in certain positions too x

Hi Anne Marie, nope I didn’t have that glass of wine, I was a good girl…glad too as I don’t feel good today, woke up with a banging head in the middle of the night, took me ages to get back to sleep so I’m one tired lass today and have a girlie night planned tonight…hopefully I will get a nap in a bit and that will help me through it. Emma that’s exactly how my leg feels…at the mo I don’t trip but bet I would if I went further hence why I may purchase a folding stick. I’ve been diagnosed since 2004, two attacks initially then nothing for six years then have had three since November 2010, last two within six months :frowning: I’m hopefully seeing neuro this month and think we will be discussing DMDS well hope, I hate needles so pretty scared and very scared of side effects as I have a three year old to look after. My foot too slaps on the ground especially when it’s starting to play up. I have noticed also that I can be stood and if someone comes over to greet me such as a colleague I’ve not seen a while and maybe hugs me and pops their hand round my shoulder I sometimes wobble! Haha! Just enrolled at a new gym today so at least there’s no excuse now! Loads of Pilates classes there too  x x x

Hi lisalou I also do Pilates only once a week and just stop when I’ve done enough! The girl who takes it is a neuro physio so that’s an added bonus! As for the dmds I take avonex and am really lucky as I don’t suffer the bad side effects only headaches which I make sure I take ibuprofen and paracetamol both together, I was really nervous about it all to my husband does it as I’m a wimp and couldn’t press the button but loads of people do I’ve been on them 6 months and only real probs were site injection swelling but we figured out it was caused by pressing it in too hard! So good luck with the dmds and hopefully you’ll be one of the lucky ones too and be fine with them…I’ve got young children too so it is daunting thinking of the side effects but I’m prove u don’t always get them! Emma x

Thanks Emma, that’s reassuring, how old are you and your kiddies? We’ve just the one, decided on no more because of m.s and also the fact my birth was pretty scary (nearly died) … Quite happy with my cheeky Charlie chap! And he is very cheeky. I’ve only done Pilates a few times but years ago, pre m.s but I do yoga even in the morning as part of my physio exercises. I love yoga so hopefully ill enjoy Pilates the same. I’ve looked at the DMDs and think it come up with avonex on the m.s decisions website…that’s once a week isn’t it? How do you fit that into your life especially if you’ve a night out planned? X

Hi lisalou sent you a pm…Emma x

Aah thanks…I’ve just noticed. I’ll reply later as off out doing in a wee bit. Thanks hun x I always forget to look at that bit. Oops sorry! X

Lisalou,

Yoga /pilates are brilliant at keeping you supple and stretching muscles and of course the breathing is so important. As for the Gym - do they have a powerplate/vibrogym machine? - These are so good for us with ms - works all the muscles that we can’t. Excellent for your core-muscles. You can follow some of your yoga exercises on this machine. l have a small powerplate machine at home - and just 10mins 3times a week makes such a difference. No matter how poor l feel before using it - l always feel so invigorated after my 10mins.

I’d go I go a couple of times a week more If I’m free the benefits I get from it are great I can’t go on the treadmill or cross trainer but weights and exercise bike isn’t a problem now I start be doing 5km on the bike 15mins of weights then back on the bike I repeat that till if 20km’s done on the bike and an hour of weight exercises it wasn’t always like that I had to slowly build up to that level and its taken me a few years but I got there if i’m tired or really fatigued its the best thing I’ve came across to wake me up better than any pills. I do yoga every week that really helps with my balance

Its not easy and times I will push myself to far but a really cold shower and 15 minutes rest will sort that out.

4 years ago I couldn’t have dreamt about going to a gym or doing any exercise but I was lucky enought to get on Tysabri over 4 and a half years ago and with the help of physio and yoga I got myself out of a wheelchair and learnt to walk again.

Going to the gym isn’t easy it takes efford for me but its worth it.

If you go take it really easy slowly build up to a level your happy with and don’t look at what others can do they don’t have MS do what suits you x

and the vibro plates are also great but make sure you use them right friends I know with MS tried them and said they made them worse and got very dizzy but if you lock your joints while standing on them they’ll do that and thats very bad for your joints try and keep your joints relaxed and tense your muscles you’ll get loads more benefit from it to  x

What an inspiration you are Mark. So pleased you are getting fitter and more mobile - Your post will encourage more folk to try exercise. And like you - being wheelchair bound is not the end - it is possible to get back onto your feet.

Good to hear from you

F.

Gym. Definitely. Maybe waIt a bit until you feel fully up to it. I am completely out of relapse now and I am cycling pretty much every day Love it. I have so missed it so much. Makes me sleep better, makes me feel so much better. I didn’t feel up to it when I was still in relapse, so I think that you should let your body decide.

Good luck.

Thanks for our replies…the gym has a power plate soi will enquire about that…I’m trying body balance tomorrow although might change to yoga or try the gym as I had physio today so my leg is a wee bit achy, not sure how well it’ll do in a class like body balance…least in the gym I can do what I fell, plus I am full of a cold too …hoping it’ll improve by tomorrow. Campion where did you get your little power plate for as if it is as good as you and mark say then I may invest in one. I seem to have lost muscle tone in my bad leg and it looks thinner so thinking the bike and other things in the gym might help with this. Going to get a good mix and really try hard. Mark you have done amazing and I’m gonna use you as my inspiration to improve my leg as best as possible. After all you did it with both, I’ve one to work on  I am good at listening to my body (although hubbies may disagree) so will take it easy, for instance may not go tomorrow if this cold has not gone, will have to go Friday though. Thanks all xx

Lol Frances I don’t know about the hunky guy but thanks xx

Just realised I put hubbies may disagree :-o honestly i.only have one hubbie! Jeez ones enough

l bought my powerplate from idealworldtv - it cost me £149 - and it is now 5yrs old. lts a Lanaform - they have more types nowand have had some cheaper. Have a google - you can do yoga/pilate type exercises on it. Lots of squats - and l just put toes on the edge and lower my heels - good for calf muscles. l do the ‘plank’ for core and upper body strength. And also just sit on it for a few minutes.

The base of the powerplate is about the size of a ‘microwave’ and l can wheel it behind the settee when not in use.

Frances

Thanks Frances I will definitely look.into it. My hubbie is really into his biking too so think we are also going to get an exercise bike. Its all money for a good cause. Still full of a cold so think I need to take it easy this week. But having equipment at home would make me feel less guilty about having a week away from the gym as I could do little and often! Thanks x
