Ocrevus side effects.

Hi everyone.
Has anybody else suffered with constant sore throat and bad phlegm after ocrevus? Had my first two doses and have been okay, but noticed just lately having a sore throat which comes and goes and a persistent layer of phlegm always stuck in my throat. Unsure if I’ve now developed hay fever or it’s just a side affect and wondered if anyone had anything similar? thanks

Could just be a cold?

I’ve not encountered anything similar, but I’m just one person.

I did think this at first, but it’s been going on for a month or two. Definitely feels like the beginning of a cold, but never actually develops into a cold

Will be interesting to see if/how it develops as you approach the next infusion date. Perhaps the throat symptoms will change as the ocrelizumab dwindles? People speak of the “crap gap” where you feel worse as the dosage runs out then your system gets filled with the new dose.

Hi,

I sort of get that. I’m never sure if like get a snius infection more often.

The other thing if you still work or have young kids (call my Daughter ‘Patient 0’ lol).

I was advised once to even keep wearing a mask as it sorta deletes half your immune system = more infections and for much longer. I’ll admit to not always doing that but tend to for 1 to 1 physical meetings and asking if people have a cool or anything. Not ideal but only chance to slow it down and I’m very grateful to get it.

Hi Bramblek, I suffer with GORD, and have to say theres a slight improvement when I have ocrevus. Could it be allergies, or reflux as both of these can cause these types of symptoms. Have you spoken with the ms nurses regarding this issue?

Thought I would relay my personal experience, I had two 600mg doses of Ocrevus since January 2025, on the first infusion I did not have the premedication steroid, but I still remember swallowing mucus during the infusion and the sore throat. The MS nurses slowed down the infusion to mitigate the nausea. Since the Ocrevus, I tend to have that feeling of mucus in my throat and I have noticed a drastic deterioration in my vocal range since the first infusion, so I can no longer sing anymore (lost falsetto as well). I noticed onset of acid reflux after the Ocrevus infusions, though it subsided. Furthermore, I read the Methylprednisolone can cause acid reflux which subsequently affects the vocal cords. I tend to refuse the premedication steroid because of its side effects that were frustrating to endure. At present, I decided to stay on Ocrevus rather than switching to an alternative medication as there is no guarantee what side effects come with other DMTs. It’s worth relaying any side effects to the MHRA to ensure they remain aware of the reality of medications. I received a formal letter from them in respect to my other side effects. Hope there is a resolution for your symptoms.

Thank you for all the replies.

I spoke to my ms nurse who has since done some tests.

It came back that I needed antibiotics for a few weeks to clear an infection up in my throat.

I don’t know if this is to do with the ocrevus lowering my immunity a little bit, but touch wood all good now.

Did this side affect go away?

I do still get this, although I know it’s not an active infection anymore, probably just another part of this disease.
