Neil Armstrong

Niel Arstrong the first man on the moon has died after heart surgery at the age of 82.

How time passes when they said how old he was I thought never he’s a lot younger than that then remembered that I was only 16 when they landed and I’m 60 next year.

Ronin

Yes, he was a gentleman and in the annals of history he will never be forgotten. “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

RIP Neil.

I was talking about him last night to my oldest son as we watched a Nat Geo Programme on the landing and mentioned that he’d just had a heart operation so he was not likely to be with us much longer! Feel privileged to have been around through that era.

Hi Ronin,

Like you, I was surprised at first when they said how old he was. But then I remembered watching the moment he stepped onto the moon’s surface (“this is one small step” etc) while at junior school, when my class teacher told the class that we were about to watch history being made and we would probably never forget it. I was 8 years old at the time and over 40 years later my teacher’s wise words have proved to be correct. Mind you, thinking about it I always thought my class teacher was really old at the time, but I wonder how old he really was, as most adults appear to be old to young children? My memory suggests he might have been in his 50’s then so in his 90’s now, but he might have been in his 30’s. Sorry Mr. Cotterall, ex of Harrison Road Junior School in Fareham if my memory has made you a lot older than you actually are!

An extraordinary man, whose giant boots and even bigger footprint will never be filled.

Speaking of footprints, have you seen those newish satellite images that are so high res you can see the disturbance tracks (might have been rover tracks), the lander stage and even the shadow of the flag for some of the missions. I think they deduced that the Apollo 11 flag had fallen or been knocked over by the return blast. Should help to quell those claiming it was all a hoax.

Thank you bob,

What I found incredible about the doubters that the yanks actually went there was the fact that it was in the middle of the Cold War.

Does anybody not think the Russian’s could track these missions? They would have the technology and would love to rubbish but they did not because they could not.

Thanks for these photos; fascinating.

A bit of trivia, my son was undertaking a school project on Neil Armstrong, so I was researching some info for him and I came across this:

Neil Armstrong’s Secret…

GUARANTEED TO MAKE YOU SMILE

ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR MODULE, NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON.

HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON, “THAT’S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND,” WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BY MILLIONS.

BUT JUST BEFORE HE RE-ENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE ENIGMATIC REMARK “GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY.”

MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGH IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK CONCERNING SOME RIVAL SOVIET COSMONAUT.

HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS.

OVER THE YEARS MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS TO WHAT THE “GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY” STATEMENT MEANT, BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED.

ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY , FLORIDA WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH, A REPORTER BROUGHT UP THE 26-YEAR-OLD QUESTION TO ARMSTRONG. THIS TIME HE FINALLY RESPONDED.

MR. GORSKY HAD DIED, SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD NOW ANSWER THE QUESTION.

IN 1938, WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MID-WEST TOWN , HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND IN THE BACKYARD. HIS FRIEND HIT THE BALL, WHICH LANDED IN HIS NEIGHBOR’S YARD BY THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW.

HIS NEIGHBORS WERE MR. AND MRS… GORSKY.

AS HE LEANED DOWN TO PICK UP THE BALL, YOUNG ARMSTRONG HEARD MRS. GORSKY SHOUTING AT MR. GORSKY:

"SEX! YOU WANT SEX?! YOU’LL GET SEX WHEN THE KID NEXT DOOR WALKS ON THE MOON!"

True story apparently !! Jools X

Jools,

That was a knee slapper; brilliant!
