Hi
Anyone know what helps with ms hugg pain?
I had one today it lasted 20mins not long I know but when your in immense pain and alone it’s scarey it was mostly in my back around bra strap area.
im off my ms meds’ at the moment so maybe I should start to expect symptoms again or may the heat triggered it off.
Any advise welcome.

hi ann
it will be this damn heat, feels like it’s trying to kill me!
the hug is caused by the little intercostal muscles between the ribs going into spasm.
therefore the only relief is by using a muscle relaxant such as diazepam, baclofen and the like.
i didn’t wear a bra throughout because i needed comfort.
keep cool and try to relax.

Hi Smokey, i’m not sure if this is good advice or not. I suffered MS hug recently and it was agony. You’re not wrong about the spasms lasting for an age. The strength of mine was such that every time the spasm kicked off,it forced the air involuntarily out of my lungs so i ended up making a v. weird sound. Fortunately, i had just started taking a course of steroids 500 mg per day for 7 days to attempt to knock on the head a number of symptoms. I don’t know if it was the results of the steroids, such a high dose and all that, but the spasms started to abate a day after I started the meds. Steroids are strong stuff so I guess the neurologist would need to weigh up the pros and cons. Alternatively my MS nurse came up with a novel solution this was after the event) she said sometimes hugging a pillow can help to alleviate some of the discomfort. Haven’t put that to the test tho. All the best Richard
I have experienced the hug during a relapse and it was so uncomfortable, and I really feel for you. The course of steroids got rid of mine for the most part. Although I’ve not experienced the hug as such since, I have occasional twinges of it and also hate hate hate wearing a bra when it’s hot as it’s soooo uncomfortable! I have actually had to take mine off during nights out and carry it round in my bag!!
it makes me panic as if I can’t breathe, even though I can. It definitely gets worse in the heat. Just a note: although the steroids worked, I did feel like I was on another planet for the week!!!
Thanks for your replys
Ive not had another since thank goodness idont get them often just every now and then months apart usually.
Im meant to be starting a new DMD soon if I can decide which one.
are either of you on one ?

Not on one as yet-have a review in early September where treatment options will be at the forefront. Have you seen the latest video releases from MS Society re treatment? Looks helpful- definitely a lot to weigh up re pros and cons.
