Memory problems - exercises or help?!

Hi I have always had memory problems since my dx 4 years ago. My ms nurse always put it down to 'working too hard but seeing as I got sacked for being disabled 2 weeks ago, I don’t think this can be it. I am feeling very upset right now as my partner just talked about a local pub with me. My response was ‘I haven’t been there’. Turns out it was the pub we met in. I cannot recall this at all abs I feel so guilty about this. Are there any exercises anyone can recommend to help with this? I already carry a notebook with me and write everything down but even this doesn’t seem to help. I also drive everywhere with a sat nav on as I cannot even remember a route I take at least 5 or 6 times a week. Any advice would be appreciated Thank you

Hello Natasha,

If it’s of any help at all, when this started happening to me several years ago, I asked my Neurologist/MS team for a referral to a Clinical NeuroPsychologist. Sounds scary, but he put me through a few simple memory tests then together with my husband who was with me, we devised coping strategies to deal with this. You might find that this is a good option - each and everyone of us is different despite the label of MS, so this could be kind of ‘tailor made’ for your own memory problems.

Hope this helps

Hi

As Amethystina said, referral to a neuropsychologist might be very useful for you. Meanwhile you are doing the right thing by writing stuff down. Keeping a diary is a good plan too. Even if it’s one you don’t necessarily write in all the time. I have a diary app on my tablet that is a god send. I use it primarily for medical related things, but I’ve been keeping it now for 5 years so there’s useful info in there to refer back to. I also use a calendar, make notes of everything, try whatever I can to keep life organised. Meanwhile, my memory is still dreadful. I can’t follow TV series’ and can’t remember the plot of novels I’ve read relatively recently. But there’s actually a good side to that. It makes reading much cheaper when you can reread the same books even only 2 years later. I’m currently rereading a series of books that I read and enjoyed in 2015.
