Lumbar Puncture, No Worries

Hi all and especially aimed at the new members who possibly have a lumbar puncture ahead and are concerned.
I received the appointment for my lumbar puncture about 3 weeks ago and Ive fretted about it ever since. I don’t know why, maybe it’s the name of it who knows. I have no issues giving blood and I’ve more than my share of tattoos however this lumbar puncture had me very anxious.
Well today was the day, 10am this morning after not much sleep.
Why was I worried. it was a breeze.
I felt nothing more than a tiny pin prick from the local anaesthetic followed by a very mild pressure sensation as it started to work.
A few minutes later the consultant then told me that it was now draining and would take about 5 minutes. Apparently the needle for the puncture had been put in and I never noticed!!!
The next thing I felt was a sticking plaster being put over the area.
In summary I didn’t feel it go in. I wasn’t aware of it being in and I didn’t feel it come out. If the consultant hadn’t spoken I would have known nothing about it.
I was laid on my side and everything is obviously behind you so you see nothing. Took about 10 minutes of which 5 were waiting for the anaesthetic to act.
Following this I was given a coffee with biscuits and left to lie on the bed for an hour.
So please if you are concerned then try not to be. It is now 3.30 and I have no side effects and feel totally fine, All that worry for nothing.
If anyone is concerned then you are welcome to contact me with any questions or concerns. I will gladly share any information I have based on my own experience today.
I think I might sleep a bit better tonight now fingers crossed.
All the best everybody
Regards
Dave

That is good to hear, and thank you for sharing. My own experience was very similar to yours - anxious in advance, but never even felt it go in (as the actress said to the bishop). :grinning:

I too fretted in advance of my painless LP.
I got a headache afterwards but that was at home in my own bed.

Hi this is great for reassurance, my experience was very much the same. It was sore the next day in my back, but nothing too bad :grinning:

@LizAC
Hi and yeah my back aches a little bit today but not enough to stop me doing anything.
